Review: We Were Liars // Unreliable MC + Unpredictable Twist = I’m Confused (in a GOOD way!)

This has been on my TBR for a long, long time 🙈🙈

I’ve read so many reviews and most of them said this one thing : GO IN BLIND. Like, you can’t know anything before you read it. It’s true. I didn’t even know what this book was about because as you’ve probably noticed, the synopsis is super vague. So… don’t you ever dare read the ending first or look for spoilers. It’s for your own good because you will regret it. Muahahahaha 😛

We Were Liars is a story about four cousins (three actually, one of them is kind of adopted) from the beautiful and wealthy Sinclair family. Every summer they come to this private island where each family has their own mansion. Our main characters Cadence, Mirren, Johnny, and Gat are of the same age so they naturally spend a lot of time together. They all have distinct and wonderful personalities and their dynamic is my cousin-goals ♥

CADENCE our narrator is the eldest Sinclair grandchild. She, like most of her family, was born rich and rarely ever has to suffer. After seeing how her mom and aunts live, Cady wants to be different. But the most important thing is she is such an unreliable narrator. You’ll wonder how much she’s telling is true and how much isn’t. That’s all I can say 😛

MIRREN is nice and fun and she’s just the type of cousin you’d love to have. JOHNNY is careless and full of joy. His personality is just so bright. GAT is the adopted cousin who doesn’t share the same family background with everybody else. He’s seen the world as it is and he knows deep down that he doesn’t really belong with the Sinclair. I really want to go on and on about them but I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything that could possibly ruin the twist for you 😂😂

The writing is one of the most unique thing you’ll ever read ♥

Lockhart uses a lot of fragmented sentences and though you might think it’s annoying, it really isn’t! I personally think the whole narration is beautiful. The chapters are also super short. Actually, the book itself is short and tiny you could definitely finish it in one sitting. Cady also has tendency to pause mid sentences and go off tangent and for a few times I found myself confused on whether she’s talking about the past or the present. But most of all, it made me question her sanity. Which I really do, until now.

The most important part of this book is definitely the twist. I’ve read so many reviews saying how people didn’t see it coming at all, some even said they they totally saw it coming but it was still mind blowing. Obviously I built some crazy high expectation about it. It surprised me. I didn’t think it would be that, but all the build-up kind of made it felt a little less… intense. Like, I knew there was gonna be a twist and I was looking forward to it. But still, it was shocking. Though if you really think about it, there were some clues…

Even after the story ended, I found myself still thinking about it. I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. But I won’t ask them here because I’d be spoiling those who haven’t read the book 😛

ALL IN ALL, there’s really only one thing you need to know about this book : GO. READ. IT. And yes, go in blind and all that. Also, regardless how many reviews you have read, try not to have too many expectations and just go with it ♥
