Review: We Were Liars // Unreliable MC + Unpredictable Twist = I’m Confused (in a GOOD way!)

Sparkling Letters Review- We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (1).jpg

RATING : 4 Stars

Goodreads Amazon The Book Depository

This has been on my TBR for a long, long time 🙈🙈

I’ve read so many reviews and most of them said this one thing : GO IN BLIND. Like, you can’t know anything before you read it. It’s true. I didn’t even know what this book was about because as you’ve probably noticed, the synopsis is super vague. So… don’t you ever dare read the ending first or look for spoilers. It’s for your own good because you will regret it. Muahahahaha 😛

We Were Liars is a story about four cousins (three actually, one of them is kind of adopted) from the beautiful and wealthy Sinclair family. Every summer they come to this private island where each family has their own mansion. Our main characters Cadence, Mirren, Johnny, and Gat are of the same age so they naturally spend a lot of time together. They all have distinct and wonderful personalities and their dynamic is my cousin-goals ♥

CADENCE our narrator is the eldest Sinclair grandchild. She, like most of her family, was born rich and rarely ever has to suffer. After seeing how her mom and aunts live, Cady wants to be different. But the most important thing is she is such an unreliable narrator. You’ll wonder how much she’s telling is true and how much isn’t. That’s all I can say 😛

MIRREN is nice and fun and she’s just the type of cousin you’d love to have. JOHNNY is careless and full of joy. His personality is just so bright. GAT is the adopted cousin who doesn’t share the same family background with everybody else. He’s seen the world as it is and he knows deep down that he doesn’t really belong with the Sinclair. I really want to go on and on about them but I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything that could possibly ruin the twist for you 😂😂

The writing is one of the most unique thing you’ll ever read ♥

Lockhart uses a lot of fragmented sentences and though you might think it’s annoying, it really isn’t! I personally think the whole narration is beautiful. The chapters are also super short. Actually, the book itself is short and tiny you could definitely finish it in one sitting. Cady also has tendency to pause mid sentences and go off tangent and for a few times I found myself confused on whether she’s talking about the past or the present. But most of all, it made me question her sanity. Which I really do, until now.

The most important part of this book is definitely the twist. I’ve read so many reviews saying how people didn’t see it coming at all, some even said they they totally saw it coming but it was still mind blowing. Obviously I built some crazy high expectation about it. It surprised me. I didn’t think it would be that, but all the build-up kind of made it felt a little less… intense. Like, I knew there was gonna be a twist and I was looking forward to it. But still, it was shocking. Though if you really think about it, there were some clues…

Even after the story ended, I found myself still thinking about it. I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. But I won’t ask them here because I’d be spoiling those who haven’t read the book 😛

ALL IN ALL, there’s really only one thing you need to know about this book : GO. READ. IT. And yes, go in blind and all that. Also, regardless how many reviews you have read, try not to have too many expectations and just go with it ♥

  1. I read this book on one sitting going in completely blind as well. I hadn’t even read any reviews or ratings so didn’t even know that there was a plot twist. It completely shocked me and left me thinking about it for days, in fact I still do. I loved the writing style. It was part of what made the book so amazing and shocking, with how beautiful but devastatingly disjointed it was. I loved the stories and poems that were sort of thrown in and I’d love to do a reread at some point knowing what I do now. This review was perfect given that it’s such a hard book to review without spoiling!

    • You know it’s a great book when you can’t stop thinking about it! 🙂 I know righttttt, I was wondering what the twist would be (my guess was Cady is psychotic or something) so it was still surprising 😀 I love the writing so much too, it’s unique and just perfect for this king of story. Yayyy thank you, glad you liked it ❤

  2. I really loved the twist at the end– I absolutely never saw it coming! I’ve read a lot of reviews where people thought it was predictable or unoriginal, but I really enjoyed it. There’s just something about the ethereal vibe it has that makes it beautiful and mysterious. Great review!

    • It was definitely the best part of the book! I don’t know about unoriginal… I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever read books with this kind of twist before, that person must’ve read A LOT hahaha 😂 exactly, ans the writing really suits it! Thank you ❤

  3. Lovely review! I am so happy you enjoyed this book. I have to admit, I read that one so long ago, and I hadn’t heard too many things about it. I had no idea there was such a twist at the end either, so… I was shocked and I just loved it so much. Tears fell down my face before I knew it, haha. I think go in blind really is the best advice you can give someone who wants to read that book 🙂

  4. I have heard so many mixed reviews on this I wonder if maybe they looked into it too much before trying it. I do love a book with an unreliable narrator, keeps you guessing that’s for sure.

  5. I went in blind with this book as well and its so important that you do, if you know the twist then your not going to be shocked. I myself didn’t see it coming at all so when it did I was like HUH? I felt like I needed to go back and reread the book to see if there’s any clues or if knowing what happened would I interpret it any different.
I think I gave it 4 stars as well!
    Great Review!

  6. YES. I completely agree! This was such an awesome book, and that plot twist at the end blew my mind. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous review! ❤

P.S. If you want another book like this, try Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas. It is absolutely amazing.

  7. This is one that I want to get to next year! I heard a lot of mixed things about it until recently when I read a rave review that made me want to read it so bad. I love books that have jaw dropping twists. The characters definitely seem interesting. I’ll be sure to go into it blind. Great review, Puput!! 😊♥

  8. I’m so relieved to hear you enjoyed this! It’s definitely a book people either seem to love or hate and I loved it (which I’m sure you remember because I was yelling at you to buy it 😅). I loved the writing style so much. It was so beautiful. I read it one sitting because I was just so immersed. I guessed the twist, but it was still extremely powerful and hit me so hard. I think Cadence going off tangent was because she was suffering PTSD but I can definitely see how it’d be confusing. I’m glad it didn’t affect your reading experience too much! Great review, Puput 😀

    • I DOOOO in fact one of the reason I bought this book was because of YOU! Hahaha but worth it, I love the writing so much it’s so unique and works out perfectly 😀 I could see the PTSD, but I was also wondering what happened before? Like with her dad and everything, she was being kind of… off? I don’t know how to explain it hahaha thank you Lauren ❤
