Book Recommendations for the Notorious Shipper Out There! <3

SPARKLING LETTERS BOOK BLOG- BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE NOTORIOUS SHIPPER OUT THERE.jpg

I would like to say that I want to read books that don’t focus on romance, but that would be a lie. The truth is, I’ve always been a huge shipper 😛 You might remember that my first few years of reading journey were filled with tons and tons of manga. My first two mangas were Detective Conan and Doraemon and I shipped Ran and Shinichi so badly ♥ and then I watched and read Naruto and I shipped Sasuke and Sakura. I have to admit, that ship took a lot of patience (and frustration) on my part until they finally got together.

But still, I got to ship #sorrynotsorry

I planned to do a list of why I love romance in books but sadly, I don’t have enough reasons to make an adequate list. I only have one reason. It’s fun, adorable, and it adds some delicious additions to the story 😍

I know some people might disagree and felt like romance sometimes steals the spotlight, or even worse but also true, romanticizes things that shouldn’t be romanticized. While I completely acknowledge the fact that romance should not be the sole focus of the story, I still really enjoy it. So here goes a bunch of contemporary book recommendations that I have sorted based on my favorite romance tropes! ♥

Buckle up you hopeless romantics, get ready to swoon 😛

Fake Relationship

Pretend Relationship 2.jpg

I mentioned this a couple times before but fake relationship is indeed my favorite trope of ever! It’s so adorable to see two people fake a relationship and along the way they realize that they’re not even faking it anymore. IT’S REAL! ♥♥♥ I enjoy arranged and fake marriage as well 😛

THE FILL IN BOYFRIEND. It’s obvious from the title alone that this book is about a fill-in boyfriend. Gia Montgomery, our protagonist, asked Hayden to pretend to be her prom date because her (now ex) boyfriend broke up with her in the parking lot and none of her friends have met him before. I admit, it wasn’t as good as Kasie West’s other books, but still super adorable! ♥

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE. Another fake relationship done to save face. Buuuut this book is so much more than that! It’s about sisterhood and family and there’s a lot of cultural aspect as well. Highly recommended. Click here for my review.

THE WAY TO GAME THE WALK OF SHAME. There was a period when this used to be my go to re-read book for like… a month! It was so cute and adorable and I absolutely loved it 😍

THE DEAL. It’s more of a fake date than fake relationship and even that was not the focus of the story. But still… got to put it on the list 😛 The Deal is the book that started my fondness of NA romance, so I’d really recommend it if you’re at least a bit into NA ♥

Best Friend Romance

Best friend romance.jpg

I’m still surprised to see the small number of this trope making appearances in YA contemporary! I mean, falling in love with someone you’ve known and care for makes a lot more sense than falling in love with some strange person you just met, doesn’t it? I definitely need to see more best friend romance in books.

A WEEK OF MONDAYS. I admit, this was a bit boring because it was so repetitive. There’s also a bit of a love triangle buuuut I love the best friend love interest so much ♥ and all in all I surprisingly enjoyed this book more than I thought I would 😛

THE SERPENT KING. I can not recommend this book enough!! It’s SO GOOD yet so underrated </3 and people, if you haven’t read it yet please do, there’s a blogger, a musician, a book nerd, fabulous friendship, best friend romance, and FEELS. SO. MUCH. FEELS 😂 Click here for my review.

Mysterious Love Interests

Mysterious Love Interests.jpg

Another trope that I’ve come to love recently! Most of the times it’s not even that mysterious but it’s still fun to keep guessing and wondering while watching our characters fall in love through texts or letters, or emails 😛

TELL ME THREE THINGS. This book was suuuch a huge surprise and I loved it so much 😍 It was surprisingly fluffy and downright adorable, plus it’s not that predictable. This book made me think and then doubt my own thoughts 🙈

SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA. Okayy this book is super duper cute and Simon is like the BEST character of ever! There’s also some amazing friendship and family relationship and of course mysterious guy 😍 also this wasn’t so predictable (though I had my suspicion and it turned out to be right). BONUS : Oreo appreciation time.

P.S. I LIKE YOU. Unlike the other two, this one is super predictable! I literally could tell who the mysterious guy was since the first chapter 😂 but no need to worry, just because it’s predictable doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable, because it IS! It’s everything Kasie West ever is, adorable and sweet. Also there’s some amazing family dynamic ♥

arroooow

That was all for now! 😀 I actually still have a few tropes I want to make recommendations for such as M/M and F/F romance, star crossed lovers, and bad boys // good girls but I feel like I haven’t read enough books to draw recommendations from so I’m trying to read more now and there might be part two sometime in the future 😛

  1. Ooo, I added Tell Me Three Things to my to-read shelf! I love mysterious love interests 😍.
One of my favorite romance tropes is unspoken love — like when two people like each other but are too afraid or stubborn to admit it. I’m sorry though, my brain is jelly right now so I can’t think of any books or movies with this trope 😕.

  2. Ah, I LOVED Simon vs the Homo-Sapien Agenda! Have you heard it’s becoming a movie? I’m way too excited. 😄

Ugh, my favorite trope is friends-to-lovers or hate-to-love. So cheesy, but so cute!

  3. Oh, I love a good romance and I am a major shipper, so this is the perfect post for me! Like you said, it’s not the most important thing in a book but I still love it when I discover a new good ship 🙂 And you already mentioned three of my favorite tropes ❤ I just discovered Kasie West this year and I fell in love with her books! I think PS I Like You is my favorite but I really enjoyed The Fill-In Boyfriend as well 🙂 And Simon is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES! It is so fluffy and adorable and my go-to re-read. I loved The Deal and To All The Boys I've Loved Before as well. I haven't read the others yet, but definitely adding them to my TBR 🙂
Another one of my favorite tropes is the 'enemies-to-lovers' trope. I actually just finished a book with this trope that I loved so much that I've been re-reading it for two weeks now: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. It's a romance with an office setting and two colleagues competing for the same promotion. I thought it was hilarious and cute and adorable ❤

    • YAYYYYY *high five* ahaha I’m a hardcore shipper too 😛 so glad to hear that! Kasie West is my favorite contemporary romance author and I’ve been in love with her writing ever since I read her first book 🙈 PS I Like You is my favorite as well. Oohhhh yes I love enemies-to-lovers too. Ah is it NA? I read an NA romance by Emma Chase (forgot the title) and it has similar them as what you just described. Will look it up on goodreads later 😀

  4. The only book on here I’ve read is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but I found myself shipping Lara Jean with John, not Peter. Oh well. I really want to read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda though and I’ve heard AMAZING things about The Serpent King. I’ve also heard great things about Kasie West, so I want to check out some of her books, too.

    • Ahhh really? Well your ship has sunk girl… I AM KIDDING (or am I?) hahaha 🙈 but Josh has his own moments 😛 you SHOULD read Simon VS & The Serpent King! One of them is super cure and the other is super heartbreaking but both are highly recommended (by me) hahaha ❤

  5. I was a HUGE shipper when I was younger, too. Coincidentally, I also shipped Ran and Shinichi and Sasuke and Sakura (though I was more a Neji x Tenten fan). I wrote tons of fanfiction for the Naruto characters and literally spent my teen years just being totally in love with the fandom on both Fanfiction.Net and LiveJournal, haha.

For some strange reason I just don’t ship characters in books that much. I think for me shipping is much more fun when the characters aren’t together or aren’t shown to be obviously into each other, and shounen manga, especially, was a lot of where my shipping happened. 😛

  6. Ooo, for a F/F romance I definitely recommend Just Juliet by Charlotte Reagan! I just read it and it was a five star read for me; so adorable and fluffy and cute.
I know what you mean about the fake boyfriend being fun, the only two I’ve read like that are The Fill-In Boyfriend and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I definitely have to check out The Way to Game the Walk of Shame, though! 🙂

  7. A fellow Sasuke and Sakura shipper! YES! Seriously that ship was probably my first ship. I always wanted them together so badly and my friends always thought I was weird and ended up hating Sasuke but not me.😂
Now onto your recommendations, I’m pretty sure the only one I’ve read is P.S. I Like You and I love that book so much. It was so cute! And yeah predictable but I didn’t mind that either lol. I’m with you on loving romance in books. I don’t want it to be the complete focus but it’s perfect when it adds that something extra to a story. Although, there are times when I don’t think it’s needed. My favorite romance tropes are more in NA than YA but I love the enemies to lovers trope (that’s in P.S. I Like You in a way) and then second chance romances. I don’t know if you read NA but a fantastic second chance romance novel is Kaleidoscope Hearts. It’s one of my top favorites. Great post as always, Puput!! 💕

    • *high five*
ME TOO I could never hate Sasuke even when he joined Akatsuki or created his own troops or killed people I know he’s a good guy at his core!!! ((NERD ALERT)) hahaha 😂😂 exactly, I don’t mind predictability when it comes to YA contemporary romance, but it’s another story when fantasy/sci fi has a predictable plot hahaha 😛 I occasionally read NA though not as much, but I’m going to check out your rec, thank you so much Melissa! ❤

      • Same! I could never hate him either. I remember when he first left Konoha and Sakura confronted him and my heart broke. I mean he did it all to avenge his family or you know so he thought. Plus, knowing how it ends now I knew I was right not to give up on him. 🙈😂
Yes! I’m the same. I always love my fantasy novels to be more complex and less predictable. I need surprised! But I think predictability is realistic in contemporary since it’s supposed to be a fictionalized depiction of reality for the most part.
        You’re welcome!! 💕😊
