My 2017 Resolutions + I’m Introducing My Novel!

SPARKLING LETTERS BOOK BLOG- My 2017 RESOLUTION & INTRODUCING MY NOVEL.jpg

Hello everyone! ♥

New year is always the perfect time to make a resolution, right? Well… I almost never do, which is weird because I’m an insanely organized person who keeps a journal & to-do-list for everything I do in my life 🙈 However, since Fadwa tagged me for This Time Next Year tag, I thought I’ll make a general list of things I want to achieve this year. Here you go! ♣

  1. Read more of EVERYTHING. I want to read more books from more genres and read more diverse books, especially books about mental illness. I’m also planning to read at least half the books from my past TBR before buying more books 😛
  2. Level up my blog, meaning I want to post more quality discussions, catch up on tags, have better scheduling, and interact more with people in this community ♥ I’ll also participate in the 2017 Book Blog Discussion Challenge hosted by Nicole & Shannon (& you should too)!
  3. Find the best job possible for me. I’m complicated, I want so much for a job and don’t want to settle for less 😂 cheers to a better opportunity this year!
  4. Decide what I want to study in grad school by the end of the year!
  5. And finally… my most important resolution this year is to finally WRITE MY NOVEL! ♥

I don’t know if you noticed this but I’ve been kind of away from the blogging world for a couple of weeks. I mean, sure I still posted regularly (which I drafted ahead of time) and replied to comments, but I was almost always late, I didn’t bloghop, and I didn’t visit back all of your blogs. Also, I haven’t read any book for two weeks 😂

It’s all because my mind was preoccupied by this project. I used to write short stories but never a novel because I didn’t think I was ready for that kind of commitment. But this time… this time feels like the right time. I’ve got ideas, I’ve got time, and I just had to do this now 😍 and I know this is the perfect time to introduce it to you ♥

P.S. I’m stealing the questions from the Beautiful Books hosted by Cait & Sky.

Meet My Novel.jpg

1. What inspired the idea for your novel, and how long have you had the idea?

I’ve had this idea for over 5 years.

What inspired me to write this story was my own experience with puppy love and my love for my family. I always want to write a story that combines both. However, I do not believe in puppy love. High school romance is not for real, at least for ME. I mean, I know some lucky people meet their soulmates in high school but most of us don’t 😂 So I pushed that idea away because I didn’t want to write about something I didn’t even believe in. After a year in college, I started to notice that I was starting to become a different person and I thought… what if high school lovers meet each other again after a few years apart and under different circumstances?

That’s the basic idea. To make it more interesting, I threw in some random things I love or would love to see in a story such as books, psychology, music, every other problems a new adult like me faces in life, FEELS (!!!), and arts.

Some titles that inspire me :

2. Describe what your novel is about!

Basically it’s about two high school lovers who meet again after a few years not seeing each other. The guy just moved back to their hometown after his father died and he had to take care of the family while the girl is waiting for grad school to start. They tried to pick up where they left off buuuut it turned out things aren’t as easy.

…Alright I give up I can’t write a synopsis and my attempt above sounds so bland 😂 so here goes a list of random things about this book 😛

  • At its core, this book is about rekindling old romance.
  • It will be dual-narrated
  • It’s also about a thousand of other problems because clearly life is not all about romance. I’m talking family issues, work problems, etc, and how those problems affect the relationship.
  • It’s VERY family related. You know I love a good family dynamic in a book, so obviously I want some good ones for my own. In this book, I will specifically explore the relationship between twin sisters and father and son.
  • FEELS! I love books that give me feels. Books that make me cry or laugh or cry AND laugh at the same times. I am trying to incorporate that on my writing.

3. What is your book’s aesthetic?

NOVEL AESTHETIC.jpg

All pictures are from pinterest. Would love to just link you to my board but it’s private 😂

4. Introduce us to your characters!

AQILA. A 22 year old woman just graduated from university, looking forward to her bright and exciting future ahead. A highly emphatic person who tend to overthink things and feel insecure about everything. She wants to help and please everyone.

AGA. Aqila’s ex boyfriend back in high school. An app developer who just started his career in Melbourne but was called home when his father died. A charming, friendly, and enthusiastic person with a lot of ambitions who thinks he has to and can do everything on his own.

P.S. Both are Indonesian names and I’m not sure how that will sound in your languages 😛

5. How do you prepare to write?

I’ve had the grand idea on my head for years so now I’m trying to focus more on the details.

  • I RESEARCH. I started by making a list of things I need to learn before I write such as twin sisters bond, father and son’s relationship, the difference between male and female thought process, types of personality, etc etc etc. I also re-read several books that have the same vibe and/or inspire me.
  • I CREATE SOME VERY DETAILED CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS. Since this isn’t a new idea, I’ve had my characters for years as well. I have this word documents where I wrote tons of things about the characters so I started from there. Some things felt too stereotypical, boring, and predictable so I changed them. I took several personality tests from my characters’ POV and I base my characters’ thoughts and actions from there.
  • I GO TO PINTEREST TO MAKE A STORY BOARD AND MAKE PLAYLISTS. This seriously helps me imagine the scenes! 😛
  • I OUTLINE… which wasn’t as easy as I expected?? Hahaha I fell into 4 plot holes but now it’s all done and I have a complete outline!
  • I WRITE… or I try to. I only wrote 4 chapters before I fell into writer’s block 😂 buuut I plan to put it on hold for a while, draft blog posts for the entire month, read a few books I need to review, AND THEN binge write without any distraction.

6. What are you looking forward to about this novel?

The process of writing down this idea and eventually, finishing. I mean, I’ve had this idea for years and I can’t wait to see it on paper ♥ also looking forward to falling in love with the characters and shipping them like crazy (which I already did!!).

7. List 3 things about your novel’s setting.

  • It’s a city that started it all. There will be A LOT of reminiscing the pasts.
  • Jakarta is a big, busy city but it’s very calm and beautiful near midnight. It’s like the quiet after the storm and it will be a beautiful background for an honest late night conversation.
  • Lots and lots of beautiful city lights ♥

8. What’s your character’s goal and who (or what) stands in the way?

They both just want to find love, have a happy life, taking care of everything they need to. But there are a lot of obstacles and while one of them wants to help all the time, the other one feels like he’s got it and doesn’t need help.

9. How does your protagonist change by the end of the novel?

AQILA used to want to please everyone, help everyone, and can’t bring herself to say no. She’ll end up being overwhelmed by her own choices. By the end of the book, she’ll realize that she can’t please everyone and know how to stand up for herself by learning it the hard way.

AGA used to think that he can do everything and that receiving help is weak. He keeps pushing people who try to help him to the point where he might have pushed them too far. By the end of the book he’ll realize that it’s okay to receive and ask for help, especially when it’s given freely by someone who loves him.

10. What are your book’s themes? How do you want readers to feel when the story is over?

LOVE. Lost. Loves for family. HEARTBREAK. Learning from your mistakes. Not taking things for granted. Butterflies. Fight for the thing you believe in. SECOND CHANCE.

I know it seems like I’m just throwing around random phrases, but I’m not! 😂 It will all come together soon… I hope… hahaha. Also, the plot is predictable (though I’m throwing in some twists here and there) but that’s because I want to focus on the journey itself. Readers might be able to guess how the story will end ever since they read the synopsis, but I want to give them a roller coaster ride to get there. That’s why I’m trying to give this book FEELS, just the way I love it! ♥

  1. This sounds so amazing,Puput 😍 I really love the outline of the book and characters sound real too.I LOVE a book which shows family love because some of the books I read just don’t put emphasis on family love.Sure friends are great and I admit that being with my friends makes me feel happy but I love my family too ❤ ❤ Best of luck for your book and hope have an awesome year ahead 🙂

P.S. Sorry for going on a rant here 😂

    • Thank you so much Angel! ❤ This outline probably didn't do the book justice because I realized I left out so many important details hahaha 😂😂 I know rightttt, but those that did, I really loved that's why I want family to be such an important part in my character's life! Noooo don't apologize it's okay hahaha thank you so much, happy new year and have a great year ahead too! 😀

  2. That’s amazing! And the personality test thing is such a clever idea! I’d have never thought about it and all the research that goes into a character’s personality. Incredible. I wish you all the best with your writing, although you don’t seem to need it, you are SUPER prepared 😀

  3. I LOVE the idea for your novel, and it being set in Jakarta is so cool! (ive never been personally but hope to one day), sounds like an exciting year for you 😀 good luck! x

    • Ahh thank you so much I’m so glad you love it! 😀 I’m surprised though many people know about (or at least fascinated by) Jakarta hahaha but I feel like it’s the perfect setting 😛 thank you and good luck to you too, have an amazing 2017! ❤

  4. PUUUUUTTTTTTT I’m so glad that you decide to write your own novel! Been a fan of your stories since senior high and I’m looking forward to read your novel 🙂 wishing you tons of luck in writing it

  5. Is it okay that I am already fangirling at the thought of your novel? I hope so!
I really love all the elements you’re putting there: the reignite of a romance, the family relationships, the Jakarta setting… *heart eyes*
Family relationships are something I value a lot when reading a book. They’re quite hard to find in YA nowadays, so I treasure every book that holds a family relationship that can give you all the feels – sometimes, even more than the romantic one!
I really hope you can finish your novel this year! And I also hope you can share more about it throughout the year – on your writing process and if you come through any motivation slump. I’m sure everything will work out, though! Good luck 🙂

    • OMG YES!! I thought this was predictable but I’m so glad you liked it, it means SO MUCH to me ❤ I hope it turns out as good as I imagined it to be hahaha but yeahhh a lot of the elements come from my own reading experience, I basically just threw in all the things I want to see in a book hahaha 😂

Thank you! I really hope so too and I might share some updates along the way. Thank you so much for the support! 😀

  6. Your novel sounds wonderful! I hope everything works out and that you continue to enjoy the writing process. There’s no better feeling that writing that last word of your story that you’ve held inside for years! Good luck! 😀

  7. Good luck with all of your resolutions! I’m excited to see what posts you come up with for the discussion challenge 😀 Job-hunting is so soul-crushing, but fingers crossed you’ll find the opportunity you’ve been looking for this year! The novel sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun! I have a WIP that’s been hanging around for two years, and it’s kind of a take on Little Mermaid. 😀 I always find motivation the most difficult part of writing, especially once the self-doubts start haha. For me, having supportive friends who will support me through those moments or having a writing schedule is helpful, but it may be something else that works for you! Good luck!!

    • Thank you so much Cilla! 😀 I already have 3 discussions on my draft hahaha still trying to come up with more interesting ideas though 😛 ooohh is it a fantasy? I had fun outlining and I hope the writing process will turn out to be fun as well hahaha ahh glad to hear you find what works best for you! Thank you so much for the support ❤

  8. I’m not a huge contemporary fan, and even if I reach for one, it’s usually LGBTQ+, but that sounds so interesting! Good luck with writing that book and looking for a job (I’m still in high school, but that’ll probably be my biggest fear once I graduate college 😬)!

  10. WELL I THINK IS SOUNDS AMAZING!! And yay for you for taking time off from blogging/reading things to focus on starting this novel. That is all kinds of awesome and I hope you have a really good time writing it! I love the aesthetic and the setting.😍 And the fact there’s a big focus on family!??! Yaaaas. I can’t wait to hear more updates about this awesomeness as you keep working on it!! *hint hint* 😂

    • EEEEPPP THANK YOU CAIT!! 😍 it’s actually blogging and seeing all my blogging friends work on their WIP (including YOU) that gave me the final push to finally start writing this, but I know time off is gonna be necessary 😀 YAYYY I love some good family dynamics and really want my book to have that element! Also yes I’m gonna do some updates here and there ❤

  11. Your novel sounds wonderful and REAL. A lot of contemporary romances lose me because of how hard it is to believe what happens, but this sounds perfect. Your description of Jakarta is 😍😍

    • Eeeeppp that’s precisely what I’m aiming for so THANK YOU! Hahaha 😛 aaahhh I should restore your faith in contemporary romance because I. LOVE. IT. 😍 hahaha and before you swoon over the setting I need to warn you that Jakarta is very busy with bad traffic and air pollution hahaha but yeahhh at night it’s beautiful and just the perfect setting for this book 😍😍

  12. Fabulous goals, Puput ♥ Good luck with all of them and your novel!! I’m not normally a huge romance contemporary reader, but your idea sounds adorable and I love how you’re not making it the typical High School Romance and all the different elements you’re bringing in sound great too!!! I can’t wait to hear more about it.

  13. Oooohhhh, congratulations on starting your novel and having a plan! One of my biggest goals for this year is to finish my novel – I spent all of NaNoWriMo writing an outline for it. It’s a fantasy…I guess an adult fantasy, which is kind of odd since I read almost exclusively YA fantasy. I’m having fun with it, but I’m struggling a little bit to keep up with the word count goal I set for myself. Good luck!

    • Thank you so much Lizzy! 😀 ahh goodluck to you too! Hope we both get to finish (or at least really work on) our novel this year ❤ not weird at all! I read mostly YA too when most of the characters are in high school but for my own book I want it to be more New Adult. I guess it's easier because I'm at that time of my life as well hahaha 😛

  14. Okay, confession time: I am in love with your novel already. I has everything I love in a book, and I’m not kidding. Also, from your characters description, I might completely relate to Aquila (what a lovely name, I love it already). Best of luck for your writing, and I hope you’ll share more of this wonderful book ❤ ❤

  15. Ahhhhh your novel sounds like it’s going to be amazing, Puput! You know how much I love second chance romances and family dynamics so I am so excited. Also, I love the sound of your characters and your writing process is very similar to mine. Except I struggle so much with outlining. I have the dive in impulse where I never want to plan but just want to throw out everything which is a terrible habit I need to break because I want to write a fantasy novel with a lot of Celtic and Irish faerie mythology so that means lots of research and outlining LOL. Good luck with everything! I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. Also, good luck with all of your goals for 2017 and I hope you have a fantastic year. 💕😊

    • Thank you Melissa, I really appreciate it!! 😀 I love them toooo hahaha oohhh I didn’t know you write, we should talk more about it ❤ sometimes I want to jump straight and write the climax but have to restrain myself and stick to the order otherwise it's gonna be very messy hahaha good luck to you too ❤

      • You’re welcome!! 💕
Yep, I haven’t written much lately but I have a whole idea that I want to start outlining. It’s just going to require some research first. We so should! 😊
A lot of the time I have the urge to write the ending first lol. 🙈

  16. *waves hand* I’ve got several WIPs I need to work on this year haha. They’re all YA and are either being outlined or drafted. Most difficult thing about writing?? For me, it’s the plot. I always have trouble with that. As for advice?? I don’t think I’m in a place to be giving any but here are some good websites: http://avajae.blogspot.hk/2016/08/tip-round-up-for-new-writers.html, http://sarahockler.com/for-writers/, http://susandennard.com/for-writers/, and https://claribelortega.com/writer-resources/.Your novel sounds amazing and I hope you find the time to finish it!
