Hello everyone! ♥
Welcome back to another recommendation post! 😀 We’re well into the rainy season where I live and you know what would be the perfect thing to do during a rainy day? That’s right, curling up in bed with books! Actually, it’ll be the perfect thing to do in ANY weather. Anywayyy, during days like these, I always prefer to read contemporary books over any other genres, preferably books that are sad and will break my heart. Therefore today we’ll be talking about books that will smash our heart right out of its place… figuratively, of course 😛
I think it’s a common knowledge that we bookworms like reading books that make us cry. I guess books like that are more… memorable? Impactful? Either way, I really love that kind of books. Tear jerker is actually one of my favorite tropes, if you could call it a trope. They almost always put me in a hangover but that’s okay, since I regret nothing 😉
P.S. The title of the post is a reference to one of my favorite talent show So You Think You Can Dance. Anybody watch it too? 😛
THE SERPENT KING BY JEFF ZENTNER
I’m actually gonna use every chance I get to recommend this book and I won’t stop until you all read it 😛 it’s got the most complex and in-depth characters you’ll ever encounter → an angsty musician, a fabulous fashion blogger, and a kind fantasy nerd. Click here to read my review.
Reasons why it’ll probably make you cry
- SO. MUCH. FEELS. </3
- So many tragic things happen to the best people. One of them is so tragic but it’s going to really move the plot forward
- The level of angst OMG!! I’m usually not into teenage angst but this one is so good!
- There’s a portrayal of depression
- I cried so much when I read this book my head literally hurt. Also I had to put it down a few times to collect myself, so you’ll probably to the same
MORE HAPPY THAN NOT BY ADAM SILVERA
This is my new favorite! More Happy Than Not deals with so many mature and tough issues like death, suicide, grief, sexual identity, violence, love, and friendship. BUT it was handled so flawlessly! ♥ The writing was a bit dense at the beginning but other than that, it was perfect. Click here to read my review.
Reasons why it’ll probably make you cry
- Our protagonist Aaron Soto has one of the shittiest life of ever. Among other things that happen there are his father’s death and his own suicide attempt
- Like I said above, so many important issues are being tackled here
- THE PLOT TWIST WILL BREAK YOUR HEART
- There’s a realistic portrayal of depression
THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE BY JANDY NELSON
Fun fact : when I first read it I didn’t like it and DNF-ed because the purple prose, but then I read I’ll Give You The Sun, loved it, and decided to give this another chance and I LOVED IT ♥ I prefer I’ll Give You the Sun but to me TSIE has its own strength. Click here to read my review.
Reasons why it’ll probably make you cry
- It deals with family death and grief. It shows us that when you lose someone, you’ll grieve for that person over and over again.
- So much family love ♥
- Lover’s quarrel, which I KNOW sounds a bit ridiculous BUT Joe and Lenny’s fights did make me cry :’)
I’LL MEET YOU THERE BY HEATHER DEMETRIOS
Meet my current favorite contemporary! ♥ I kinda resented the fact that NO ONE made me read this sooner because it was SO GOOD? I don’t want you to feel the same so I’m telling you this : read this book! It’s got aaaallll the things I love from contemporary → amazing love story, complex family dynamic, & wonderful friendship! Click here to read my review.
Reasons why it’ll probably make you cry
- ALL THE FEELS!
- The way the story was told was so raw and emotional you could’ve felt what the characters felt
- A realistic portrayal of PTSD and war stories
- Another heartbreaking lover’s quarrel!
I read this book before the movie came out just so I’d already know the story when I go to the movie, which is weird because I never end up watching the movie 😂 I never expected to love this book but I did. It was a huge surprise and I loved it. I love the story so much! What a punch in the feels! However, this book has been called out for being problematic and ableist, so you might want to take that into consideration if you’re planning to read this book 🙂 Click here to read my review.
Reasons why it’ll probably make you cry
- It was very emotional
- Reading how different Will’s life became after the accident and his frustration with it was so heartbreaking
- The love story is just… sad
- THE ENDING!! P.S. it was a realistic ending for me, but it could also send a wrong message about a disabled’s life.
Those are five heartbreaking contemporary books I could think of at the moment! I’m always in search for more and I also have some possibly sad books I’m looking forward to read soon! Here they are ♥
Alright everyone, those are my recommendations for sad & heartbreaking contemporary books. Perfect for when you just wanna curl up in bed and read! 😀 Have you read any of these books? What do you think about them? Anywayyy, you know the drill, I’m always looking for recommendations so tell your favorite sad books! ♥

Which one of them you haven’t read? YOU SHOULD hahaha awww I’ve heard a lot of similar reactions to It Ends With Us haha it’ll be my first Colleen Hoover’s book I guess 😛

Let’s not mention my shame of how high the number of books is that I haven’t read, shall we?
And It Ends With Us was my first (and still is) Colleen Hoover book too. I could see myself reading more of her books, but not all of them.

I can’t believe I haven’t read any of these books and I love a good cry. But to be honest, it doesn’t take much to get me going. It probably wouldn’t even have to be a sad book! Really great list, I’ll have to add some of these to my TBR list, thanks!

OMG same!! I cry sooo easily like I’m probably the sappiest person when it comes to emotional books?hahaha but rest assured, the books I put on the list are the ones that made me cry the most (plus a lot of other reviewers felt the same, so) and you should totally read them if you like young adult contemporary 😀

I’ve been in the mood for a good heartbreaking romance (idk if I should really use “good” there, but you get what I mean haha). I’ve already read More Happy Than Not & am currently listening to Me Before You but I want to read all the other ones as well! Great list.

I am so rarely in the right mindset for emotional titles. I am a super emotional person. This can make reading heavier books a good or bad experience haha. But I know where I will look when the modd is right 🙂

I didn’t even realise it but I’m with you, a book which hits you in the feels like a punch in the phase is a trope I enjoy, if it’s considered a trope. I adored I’ll Meet You There, although that didn’t wring me out emotionally as much as Me Before You did, and don’t even start me with After You where I was just crying throughout. I’ve not read The Serpent King or More Happy Than Not yet but they are up there on my list.

I know right!! Books like that are amazing and tend to stay with me for a long time hahaha ohh I bawled like a baby while reading I’ll Meet You There (I cry rather easily hahah) but omgggg Me Before You was so heartbreaking and made me cry so much!! The Serpent King DESTROYED me so I highly recommend it ❤

I love emotional contemporaries! The Serpent King, I’ll Meet You There, and More Happy Than Not are definitely some of my favorites. I really need to read The Sky is Everywhere, because I loved Jandy Nelson’s writing in I’ll Give You the Sun. Ooh, you’re going to love History Is All You Left Me (even though it’ll definitely tug at your heart strings). And I’m also eagerly anticipating Goodbye Days! Great post 🙂

I adore books that make me sob. The one that stands out most in my mind is Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma—but the subject matter is a bit taboo, so keep that in mind if you’re going to check it out.

The Goodbye Days is a “maybe” read for me, so I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts! And The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is 100% the way to smash your heart into infinite smithereens. Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli is a close second, though.

Sad contemporaries are always my favorite. They really do seem to be the most memorable reads. The Sky is Everywhere, I’ll Meet You There, and Me Before You! Those three are books that are guaranteed to make me cry no matter how many times I read them. I haven’t read Me Before You in a while but I did watch the movie again recently and SO MANY TEARS. More Happy Than Not and The Serpent King are on my TBR for this year as well as History Is All You Left Me. On your list of ones you want to read I’ve actually read It Ends With Us and sobbed so that one is definitely a great book if you’re looking for one that will smash your heart. I can’t wait to see what you end up thinking of it! Great recommendations, Puput!! 💕😊

Definitely agree with I’ll Meet You There. ALLLLL the feels in that one. I haven’t read any of the others, but have them all on my TBR. A few of my favourites are The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord, 16 Things I Thought Were True by Janet Gurtler, The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick, Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone, If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, In Honor by Jessi Kirby, and Sugar by Deirdre Riordan Hall.

I LOVE sad books so this id such a great post for me! I really enjoyed The Sky is Everywhere and I’ll Meet You There. Have you read I’ll Give You the Sun? I LOVED that book and it will rip your heart out too. I really really disliked Me Before You. That ended made me so mad. So so mad. And if I’m being honest, I hated The Serpent King. I feel like the only person that did! It was so full of southern US stereotypes. I couldn’t get past that. Anyway, sorry to be such a downer lol. Fun post!

Sad books are the best, aren’t they!? Hahaha I’ve read I’ll Give You the Sun but it didn’t really make me sad, probably because I was too focused on its adorableness? I mean, Jude+Oscar=OTP!! Hahaha ahh really? I get it though, the ending will either break people’s heart OR offend them. Oh I’m so sad to hear that </3 hahaha but the author is a real Southern man, though, I'm guessing he spoke from experience?hehe yayyy thank you! ❤
