Sparkling Letters Monthly Recap: February 2017

Sparkling Letters Monthly Recap- February 2017.jpg

Hello everyone! ♥

Welcome to another recap post! Another month has passed, though it wasn’t so surprising  this time considering February only has 28 days 😛 It was a generally good month, but a lot of things happened this month. The good, the bad, the in between, and I’ll tell you everything about it!

life-updates-1

  • After being ‘forced’ to make a tough decision last month, I started a new job at a psychological consultant. I love it. It’s so in line with my major, which means I get to put my knowledge and skills into practice while still having the chance to learn something new. But the best thing about this job is that it is in my city! My previous job (and all the other potential ones) is always located in Jakarta, the capital. The commute is HELL. I’m not exaggerating, the traffic is always bad and the public transportation is always jam packed. It’s exhausting. My current office is only 30 minutes bus ride away, give or take 😀
  • At the beginning of the month one of my kitten, Jack, was sick. He didn’t want to eat for a few days. He didn’t even want to drink the medicine 😦 once he was all better, we took him and Dory to get vaccinated to the vet and now they’re healthy and happy 😀
  • I started bullet journal ♥ I’ve been thinking about it for a while but haven’t really done it. At the beginning of the month, I had this urge to just start it… so I did! It was fun, though I don’t journal everyday, hehe 😛 here are some shots from my journal.
  • I just realized how messy my life is! So I created a monthly tracker on my journal and it shows that I have suuuuch an unhealthy lifestyle </3 I almost never ate 3 times a day, I ate junk food and instant noodles like 3 days a week, I skipped vitamin every so often, and I didn’t work out like at all :’)
  • My mom’s birthday was on February 19th! Her work friends come to our house at 6 in the morning and it was so, so loud. They’re almost as loud as my friends. You wouldn’t know it was a birthday celebration for a 50 yo woman. We had family dinner and I was so stuffed.
  • One of my senior from university died in an accident 😦 ugh senior sounds like she was merely an acquaintance, but she wasn’t. She was my friend. It was so sad and shocking and it hit me so deeply. She was such a pretty, nice, funny, and probably the most genuine person I ever met. It seems surreal, but maybe it’s true, God always takes the good ones first. I’m keeping her in my thoughts ♥

books-life-1

This month is the month I caught up with ARCs and new releases! God there’s so many great, promising books this year I’m having a hard time keeping up :’) I managed to read 8 books in total. Here they are! ♥

February Hauls

Most of my February hauls are books I purchased on January but only just arrived this month. On February, I only ordered two books which are A Conjuring of Light and The Hate U Give. They’ll probably arrive around mid March. I’m trying to save money because there are sooo many promising new releases this year!!

on-the-blog-1-1

This month I did something wonderful on the blog! I finally decided to take the title of Diverse Book Bloggers and launched a new feature called The Diversity Corner ♦ it’s a monthly feature where I talk about diversity, representation, book recommendation, diverse blogger recommendation, and news about diversity! Here’s the introductory post where I talked about my stance as a diverse book blogger and the reasons behind my new feature.

The first edition of diversity corner is about Muslim representation in books. Other than that, I also talked about diversity news in February, introduced you to my favorite Muslim bloggers, and created a list of diverse book recommendation. You could check it out HERE (P.S. I’m going to pin this post until a week before the next edition is published so you’ll be able to see it on the top of my page)

Aside from that, I settled with the new blogging schedule, which is 3 posts a week. Here’s my schedule in case you want to keep an eye for my posts 😛

  1. Tuesday : random posts (tag, meme, award, recap, personal post, lists, recommendations)
  2. Thursday : book reviews. I’m probably gonna do double/mini reviews more often because I have sooo many reviews I need to post!
  3. Saturday : book & blogging discussions

My favorite posts this month :

Bookstagram

This past two months I’ve been so inactive on bookstagram. I barely posted anything anymore, which was weird because I had the photos. It’s just… I was too lazy and couldn’t be bothered to write a caption and plan my pictures and all that. These days all I do whenever I open my bookstagram account is like the first 10 pictures I see, watch some stories, and switch back to my personal account.

I started to ask myself this one question : should I quit bookstagram? Now before you say no (as if you’ll say no, haha) I’m gonna list down some of my reasons

  1. I’ve been in bookstagram slump for 2 months and I have no desire to get out of it
  2. I never interacted anymore
  3. The thing is, I don’t know most of my bookstagram friends. For some reasons they’re not the same people I know through the blog & Twitter 😦 I mean, some of them are, but most aren’t. I feel like most of the people there are strangers and it’s just weird
  4. My account isn’t growing. My followers never improve, if anything they’re going down, and I don’t even care. Not the way I care about my blog stats.
  5. Instagram is getting weirder! I mean, have you seen the new updates? It’s turning into snapchat + facebook 😂

So… what do you think? Should I keep my account or should I just quit altogether? 😂😂

Important announcement.jpg

The next edition of The Diversity Corner will be about Asian representation (March 25). I’m trying to be as comprehensive as possible so I’m looking for Asian bloggers who might be interested to team up with me! I’m gonna need your input on Asian rep in books (the misconceptions, what we want to see more, how not to describe Asians in books, book recommendations, etc).

If you’re interested, let me know! Comment on this post, mention me on Twitter, e-mail me, anything! Looking forward to hear from YOU ♥

So that’s my February recap, everybody! What do you think about my new feature, The Diversity Corner? Do you love it and have any suggestions? What do you think I should do with my bookstagram account? 😂

How about your February? Anything interesting? 😀 Link me to your own recaps or just tell me! Would love to hear your thoughts! ♥♥

  1. Personally, I like your Instagram, but I can’t tell you what to do with it! I just started out last week on my own, but I’ve been on it for a couple of months and I’ve really enjoyed it, but it’s up to you! 😂

Glad to see you liked Empress of a Thousand Skies; it’s on my TBR, and I’m super excited to read it! And I loved Caraval as well, so I’m glad it lived up to the hype for you! ❤️

I love the Diversity Corner! I’m not Asian, though, so I can’t help you with that aspect. 😂

    • Aww thank you but I think I’m keeping it for just a little while and then say goodbye… if nothing changes my mind hahaha 😂 oh yayyy I hope you enjoy it too, it’s amazing and so, so diverse! I was nervous of Caraval because of the hype so I was glad to find out I liked it hahaha that’s okay but thank you ❤

  2. This was such a good post to round up the end of the month! I think I might do something similiar on my blog too. Also, I love that you have a schedule and plan for what you post on your blog! Sandra and I don’t really seem to go by set posts on certain days (well, except for Top 5 Wednesdays) but it must be great for readers, because they know exactly what to expect!

And I so feel you on the bookstagram thing.. I created a second accout to go with my blog, but I just rarely post on there. If I post on Instagram it’s on my personal one.

I’m sorry about your loss, I’ll keep your friends in my thoughts!

    • Oh yeahhh I love reading/writing wrap up post, though I admit it takes quite a while especially with all the links in it hahaha 😂 the schedule is fairly new! I’d been blogging for like… 10 months before I came up with a schedule. I used to post every other day without thinking of the contents, like sometimes it’s aaaalll discussions or all reviews but I realized it’s messy and I ran out of topics soon, so that’s why I finally worked a schedule 😀 I know riiiight I’m still not sure what I want to do with my account hahaha and thank you so much ❤

      • I believe that! I was just looking for one link earlier for a post and it took me quite a while to find it again! Cant imagine how long it took you.

Sounds to me like blogging and figuring out what you want to do and post is all about time and experience! I cant wait to see where we are in a couple of months!

  3. I have to say I really liked your ‘why we need more positive girl portrayals’ this month. I thought it was such an important topic. Glad you enjoyed the inexplicable logic of my life as well, I’m really looking forward to reading that one. I’m glad you liked caraval as well, I really enjoyed it as well, I’d heard mixed reviews about it so I was pleasantly surprised! Really great wrap up post! ❤

  4. Okayy… I have so much to say! I liked Smut, but I don’t think it was that good. I mean it was just an average read for me, you know? And your bullet journal is GOALS OMG. Sorry for your cat, it’s good that he is good now! Plus quit Bookstagram if you want to. I personally suggest you to do it. I made an account, and stayed for like 2 weeks. I couldn’t do it anymore. I mean I had 300 followers to say the least, but I wasn’t feeling like doing it, and had literally no inspiration whatsoever. Also, I killed HOURS just scrolling and I have my finals, so I was wasting potential time that I could have been studying instead. so I deleted the app!
And about that Asian Representation thing, I would love to join in and say my views Puput! Great post as always girl <33

    • It is an average NA story, tbh, but I just like Blake and Amanda so much hahaha 😛 aww thank you! I’m trying to journal everyday this March ahaha I think I’m gonna quit… eventually, but I’m still keeping it this month in case I change my mind hahaha oh greattt that’s awesome!! I’m gonna get back to you once I figure this thing out 😀

  5. Wow your month has been busy! I’m exhausted reading about it all. Glad to hear you’re liking your new job, it’s never easy to do but when you’re obviously liking it then that’s good. Sorry to hear about your friend as well, it’s never easy to lose someone so my thoughts are with you and their family.

As for bookstagram, I’ve got no advice, I barely use mine but I like having it there, it’s more of a personal account which includes a lot of books more than anything else. I should probably delete it but I like to browse all the pictures. I don’t know. If you’re not enjoying it anymore then stop, that’s my philosophy with things, that way you can focus your energies on other things instead.

    • I am exhausted *living* it hahaha I’m so ready for March to take over 😂😂 yeahhh it took some adjustment but I can see myself work there for a while hehe thank you so much Becky 🙂

Nahhh I used to only have one personal account but then it started to get messy and I created a bookstagram account. Now I’m thinking of going back to only one account hahaha I think I’ll eventually delete it but still keeping it this month in case I change my mind 😛 thanks for the advice!

  6. I’m so happy to hear you found a job that you love AND that’s not too far away from home. That’s seriously my goal ahah, the commute is THE WORST, I understand what you mean by that ahha.
Your bullet journal looks stunning! I really love lists and try to keep everything organized at most, but I never tried bullet journaling, mostly because I wouldn’t know how to make the whole thing look pretty and not a mess, and…well, I just want to have a pretty journal at times, so it’s pretty shallow? Haha.
On bookstagram, I think that if you’re not feeling it, you shouldn’t force yourself to post. All of the pictures aren’t lost, they can always be used for your blog, and the most important thing is that you have fun when you’re posting – and it seems like you aren’t too much on instagram :/
    I hope you’ll have a beautiful month ❤ ❤

    • I KNOW RIGHT!! I used to spend like… 5 hours on the road to and from work and every day I came home exhausted, so this new job is a big win even if the pay isn’t as high hahaha 😂😂 ohhh I see what you mean, when I first looked at other people’s journals I got intimidated but then I just rolled with it hahaha 😛

That’s exactly what I think! I use the pictures for two purposes anyway hehe I think I’ll quit eventually but for this month I’m still keeping it, in case I change my mind 😛 have a wonderful March to you too Marie! ❤

  7. oooh, your bullet journal is SO PRETTYYYY!!!! Woah ,a birthday party at 6am?! my goodness.

Aww I’m sorry to hear about your friend.

I don’t know about bookstagram. I’m thinking if you don’t like it, then you don’t have to do it. Personally, I don’t really care either way. I do have an insta for my blog, and an insta for myself as a personal one, and I like both. But I don’t really post book pictures on my blog insta.

  8. Yay! Congrats on your new job!
To be honest, I also really reaaally need to organize my life better. I did buy a calendar and I try to make daily notes on my phone with everything I need to do, but I always forget to check it and I miss stuff. I’d love to try bullet journal, but hand-crafting stresses me out. I’m absolutely terrible at it! I can’t even make a straight line – not even using a ruler!
(By the way, I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I’ll keep her on my thoughts as well <3)
If I could give you any advice about your bookstagram, I'd tell you to just delete your account for now. When I had Instagram (not related to books), I also got into some slumps and decided to get back for it when I felt inspired again. However, everytime I did get back, I couldn't get my stats back. Most part of my followers had unfollowed me for staying away for so long and the accounts that still followed weren't active anymore. So it was even more difficult to get my stats back then it would be to start from zero. So I'd definitely suggest you delete it for now and maybe get back on it after a few months, if you feel like it.
I hope you can make the better decision for you! And I also hope you have a fantastic month!

    • Yayyy thank you Lais!! 😀 I used to be s organized with my life but ever since I left university I felt like my life became a mess hahaha there are plenty types of journaling out there so maybe you’ll find one that suits your preference? 😛 thank you, it means a lot 🙂

  9. JAKARTA COMMUTE IS HELL. I’m soooo (not) looking forward to that part of going back, haha.

I also started a bullet journal all the way back in December though with how hectic life is, I’ve just sort of used it as a reflections book instead of like, a to-do list. I’m loving the look of yours!

RE: Instagram – now that I’m moving I have NO IDEA what I’m going to do with it. I enjoy it quite a bit but I don’t foresee myself getting a lot of print books in Indo, and I’m too lazy to continually think of new ways of making sure my ebooks look nice, haha. I can definitely relate – my care for Instagram is almost none at all.

Sorry to hear about your senior, by the way. ❤

    • I KNOW RIGHT!! It’s the worst, welcome back hahaha I’m glad those days are over… for now. I might look for a job in Jakarta again 😂 will you be working in Jakarta too?

Ugh sameeee journal is supposed to help during your hectic days but to me I simply forget to journal hahaha aaah yes, I said this on my comment to your wrap up post… with Kinokuniya is the most complete store in the country, it’s hard to get new releases early hahaha I know right, I just don’t care and that’s all 😂😂

  10. Sounds like you had an eventful February, Puput ♥ Once again I’m really sorry for the loss of your friend. Still sending all my love and thoughts your way. I’m glad to hear your kitten is okay though!! Good luck with the new job too 😀 And I looove the bullet journal!

Great haul too 😀 And you managed to read a great amount of books too! I’m glad you enjoyed Caraval. I hope you enjoy AQKOT!

I stopped using Bookstagram a while back, but my “photos” were nowhere near your level of pretty. It definitely seems like a kind of niche community that caters to certain people. I’ve been hating all the updates too. With the slideshow thing now it seems like even more pressure to create more content, haha.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yayyy Lauren great to see you back in here! 😀 it was so eventful hehe and thank you Lauren, means a lot 😛 I felt like reading wise this month was bit slow because I DNF-ed like… 3 books, I guess hahaha I’m currently on a fantasy streak but I’ll start AQKOT soon 😀

Ahaha thank you, but I agree! It simply doesn’t feel like my kind of community. I feel out of place and I’m not motivated to post even if I keep taking photos! At least the photos will be useful for the blog though ahaha I think I’m gonna keep it for another month and if nothing changes my mind, I’ll delete it eventually 😂😂

    • Both of those books are awesome!! You’re probably gonna love The Bear and the Nightingale, it has the same dark and fairy tale vibe as Wintersong (which I haven’t finished btw 😂) hahaha thank you Anisha, that means a lot 🙂

  11. I started listening to the audiobook of The Bear and the Nightingale, but it’s not quite catching at the moment. Think I need to give it more attention than I’m able to at the moment. However switched over to Caraval, and that is going really well at the moment!

    Liked by 1 person

    • It is very slow though, it’s not the kind of fast paced fantasy that will hook you right away. Plus it’s told in third person past so I felt a little… disconnected from the characters at first haha but once I got the groove and started to care for the characters, it all became better so I hope you would enjoy it eventually 😛

  12. I’m so sorry about your friend, Puput! I’m sending you all of the hugs right now because I know exactly what it’s like to go through that. A friend of mine from high school passed away at the beginning of last year because of a drunk driver. Also, I’m glad your kitten got better and congrats on the new job!
It looks like you had a fantastic reading a blogging month! And I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed The Inexplicable Logic of My Life. I’ve been worried about reading that one because I’ve been hearing mixed things. And I can’t wait for your next Diversity Corner!! On the bookstagram front, what you’re going through is what I went through. I went into a terrible slump and realized I never even interacted on there a lot. Ultimately I’ve not touched mine in months. But I’d say if there’s even a chance you’ll want to get back into it then keep your account. I haven’t deleted mine just in case. I hope you have a fantastic March!! 💕😊

    • Thank you so much Melissa, I’m so sorry you had to go through the same thing. It’s so sad 😦 yeahhh I wasn’t even aware of the problematic aspect until I was done reading haha I hope you still enjoy it though 😛 yayyy I’m currently working on the next edition! I’m teaming up with some of the most amazing Asian bloggers 😀

I KNOW RIGHT!! My instagram account is basically dead and I don’t even care hahaha I’m keeping it this month but I don’t know about the future hahaha thank you, hope you have a great month too Melissa ❤

  13. I loved your Diversity Corner post. I’m trying to read more diversely myself. I really want to read The Bear and the Nightingale, I’ve heard such good things about it! I like your way of organizing your posts every week. I’m way behind on writing book reviews and now I’ll have to catch up in March. Happy reading!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you! I’m so glad you love it and I’m working on the next edition, hope you like that one as well 😀 The Bear and the Nightingale is amazing but I think it’s that kind of book that could be a hit or miss for some people hahaha because of the pace and the prose. But I do hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 😀 Have a wonderful March ❤

  14. I also started a bullet journal this month and it has already made my life so much easier! I want to read all of the books you mentioned so, they’re added to my endless list of books I want to read! I also started a bookstagram account but with me reading so many e-books and not being able to put the effort that is required, I’m thinking about deleting it and maybe starting again when I’m completely sure I want to commit to it! I also want to step up my diversity game so, I really need to do some research and find books that I’m interested in reading

  15. Congrats on the new job! A good commute is important! And it’s in the field you want, right? So that’s perfect! I’m glad to hear your cats are doing better. But I’m really sorry for your loss ❤ that's always hard.

You read A LOT in Feb. I hope March is great for you ❤

  16. I’m so sorry to read about your heartbreak in February. Losing a friend is so difficult. I’m happy to read that your kitty recovered! Sick pets are also hard to deal with. On your happier notes–I’m glad you found a job closer to home and that you read some books that I have waiting for me–Caraval is up next.

  17. What a month you had, Puput! 🙂
I’m really sorry for your loss. Though I believe that too: God always takes the good ones first. And be sure that she’ll be one of your angels and will for ever look after you ♥ On a happier note, what a lovely bullet journal! =D I’m really messy and have thought about starting one because of that, but I don’t have the patience to have a pretty one ahaha
Eight books is a great number! I cannot wait to read Caraval. It’s was my most anticipated release of the year, and once I bought it, I just couldn’t start it. I guess the hype around it kind of scares me. What if I’m this excited about it, and it turns out to be not that good? Still, I’ll get to it some time in the future 😀
Good luck with your new job!! So great you like it that much!!

PS: I simply loved The Diversity Corner, and I cannot wait to read every single post of it ^^ I’m starting to read more diverse books, and I’m always open to suggestions!

    • Thank you 🙂 I’m sure she’s in a better place now! ❤ ahaha bullet journal doesn't always have to be pretty, as long as it suits you 😀 I hope you'll find the style that you like the most and then start from there ahaha same!! I put off Caraval for weeks before actually picking it up. My advice : forget about the hype. It's a great book but the hype was kind of too much hahaha thank you so much! I'm glad you loved Diversity Corner 😀
