How to Make A Bookworm HAPPY

SPARKLING LETTERS BOOK BLOG- HOW TO MAKE A BOOKWORM HAPPY.jpg

Hello everyone! ♥

I’m supposed to post a discussion every Saturday but several things happened, so I’m a day late 😂 last week I was so, so swamped with work and for once I didn’t have any discussion post drafted. I had to work half day on Saturday so I thought I was gonna whip up a quick post on the afternoon. The thing is, I got sick on Friday night and turned out… my biggest fear came true. I got chicken pox 😂😂😂 I never got it as kid so I always have that fear of eventually getting infected.

Yesterday I felt so bad and was high on fever I physically didn’t have the energy to even open my laptop, let alone wrote a post ahaha but today I felt stronger and better and I’m ready to get back into blogging! Anyway, I’m gonna have to stay home for a week so I’m gonna be around for a while, that is depending on my health, obviously 🙂

Anyway, today I’ll bring you something fun : how to make a bookworm happy! ♥ I hope we could all relate and if there’s a non bookworm reading my post, I hope it’ll help you understand us better 😛 let’s get started!

A Quiet Kind of Thunder 3.jpg

Being asked for recommendation

I swear this one will never get old no matter how often it has happened to me. I’ll always shriek with delight every time someone comes to me and ask for recs, whether they’re a big reader like I am or not. I don’t know, it just feels amazing that someone actually trusts my opinion and taste on books that they ask me. However, I usually get carried away when giving recommendation 😂

The other month my close friend came to me and said that it’s been a while since she read for fun. She wanted to get back into it and asked some books to try. I asked her what she wanted to read and she basically said “you know what I like”. I did, so gave her a bunch of book recommendations along with their synopsis and my thoughts. And by bunch I mean it was A LOT my friend had to actually stop me. She said it was a bit overwhelming and that she didn’t have the money to afford all of the books I mentioned hahaha 😂

Big Sale!

Ok to be fair, who doesn’t love big sale? I love it whether it’s about books, clothes, makeups, basically anything. I wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to shop for books hahaha and the thing is, it doesn’t have to be a big sale. I see a 5% discount and already thinking up what books to buy. I once got a birthday discount and I went to this other city where the bookstore is located ON A CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON just to use that discount (my birthday was on December 24th ).

Good news, there will be an international book fair again mid April and I am so stoked! I swear it’s the best thing that ever happens to my country! It’s all imported books and the price is insanely affordable. Last year I couldn’t got because it was held in Surabaya, 800km away from where I live. I seriously considered going but after thinking it through, I realized the travel expense would probably cost me more hahaha I already made plan with some of my friends to save up and go there this year! ♣

Someone to flail together

Sometimes when a book is so good it’s hard to contain my excitement. All I want to do is talk and talk about the book non stop but who would listen to me rave about it? Not my family, that’s for sure. I know because I tried, before I was part of the book blogging community 😂 I raved to my family, I raved to my friends, but they were like, “Okay Put we heard you.” Ugh, what an amateur. It was so unsatisfying hahaha luckily now I have YOU guys to flail with! Whenever I have something to talk about I just DM one or two of you and there I have someone to flail together until my excitement dies a little 😛

Someone to be the black sheep together

It is fun to have a friend to flail with, but it is even more fun to have someone to be the black sheep together hahaha 😂 I love sharing an unpopular opinion because it means I’m not the only one bitter old lady who loves to hate things. It is the book’s fault haha buuuut if I’m sure it’s a me thing, not the book thing, I genuinely wish you all would enjoy it more than I did! But if I’m 100% sure it’s the book that actually sucks… well, I kinda want you to hate it with me or to not bother at all hahaha I’m mean, I’m sorry. Or am I? 😛

Being on a streak of good books

I love it when this happens! I try to make the best of this moment because I know it won’t last forever. You know that feeling, right? The feeling that whatever book you pick up, you can’t go wrong. Until that one disappointing book shatter this thought, obviously 😂 I think I was in that state around the beginning of the year. Everything I read, I loved, I rated at least 4 stars. Good time.

The opposite happened at the end of February. I basically hated everything I read and even DNF-ed 2 of them. I was in danger of serious reading slump. I juuuuust got out of this after reading A Conjuring of Light and let me tell you it was 5+++ stars! If anyone is in a danger of slumping and in need of amazing fantasy to help them get back in the game, definitely consider reading ACOL 😛

Having someone read books we recommend and actually love them

This right here is the true winner! I always feel like an accomplished bookworm whenever someone comes to me and says that they read this book because of me and they love it!! I mean, recommending book is fun and all that but what if the person we recommend books to don’t like them? They probably would think we have weird taste in books and don’t trust us anymore hahaha

Discovering new book or author on one’s own

Believe it or not, I made myself read I’ll Meet You There not because other people loved it. I read a few reviews but I never felt compelled to actually read it. One day I read the synopsis and was like, “huh this sounds interesting I’ll give it a try.” AND I LOVED IT! I frantically went back to all the positive reviews and nodded along with their praise 😛

“Let’s go to a bookstore.”

Seriously guys, if you ever want to make your bookworm friend or partner happy, take them to the bookstore! I love going out but more often than not I prefer to stay home to read and be lazy. But if there’s even a slight chance of stopping by the bookstore, well, I’m already getting ready to leave 😛 this is how the conversation usually goes.

Person : let’s go out
Me : hmmm I don’t know…
Person : I might need to pick up something at the bookstore
Me : I’M IN LET’S GO ALREADY

So anytime you want to ask a bookworm out and they seem reluctant, just promise them you guys could stop by the bookstore for a few minutes or maybe an hour at least 😛 also even better than “let’s go to the bookstore” is “I got this”, “it’s on me”, and “it’s my treat” mwhahahaha 😂

Alright everyone, those are some of the things that will make a bookworm happy! Other possible source of happiness include book mail that arrives early, being noticed by favorite authors, and finding a new favorite. Now tell me, do any of these things make you happy as well? Or are there other things that I missed? I’d love to hear your thoughts! ♥

  1. Lovely, these all make me so happy as well 💙 Something similar to having people read the books you rec – when I post a review and someone I hadn’t expected reads it and tells me they’ve added it to their TBR because of it. BEST FEELING. 😄

  2. Oh, yes, I can definitely agree with all of these! I absolutely love sharing unpopular and popular opinions with others, so I feel less alone, especially since I don’t really know any bookworms in real life. AND YES TO RECOMMENDING BOOKS. I love it when someone’s like, “What book should I buy?” or “What would I like if I liked this?” I’m prepared with a mental list and everything. XD I hope you feel better soon!. ❤

  3. Aw, chicken pox sucks. I hope you get well soon!
These are all so true, especially the being asked for recommendations one! It feels like all my hard work has paid off and it’s my time to shine lolol. One thing that makes me happy, but some people have a problem with, is when a book I read is made into a movie. It’s nice because then there’s more people to flail with 😊.

    • It definitely does! Thank you Belle hahaha 😀 I knoooow I feel like a successful AND acknowledged bookworm when people come to me asking for recommendations hahaha ah I love it too when books are made into movies mainly because WE GOT FACES! I can never imagine faces for my characters hahaha

  4. I love, love, LOVE sales! But then again, who doesn’t?

But even more than that, I love having someone to flail with! Earlier this week, Sandra and I were going to talk blog stuff (upcoming posts and stuff like that) but then she asked me about AGOS and we just went on this big tangent that had nothing to do with blogging. xD But it was a lot of fun!

Pre-orders arriving early are probably the most exciting thing! I actually got my copy of ACOTAR almost a week early when it first released and I LOST it. I was so excited! But who wouldn’t be? And on the exact opposite is book mail arriving late. I had to wait a week for ACOL and still haven’t gotten my copy of The Hate U Give…

I still remember the first time I had randomly tweeted Leigh Bardugo and then I got a notification and I thought it was a fan account or something liking the tweet, but no! It was actually Leigh. I might have flailed even more than when my ACOTAR order came early. XD

    • RIGHT?! Only people with willpower too strong could resist book sales ahahaha 😛 I love talking books with someone equally enthusiastic as well haha AND I’M EVEN MORE GLAD YOU LOVED AGOS! My copy of ACOL actually arrived wayyy earlier than it was supposed to haha it was supposed to arrive on the 15th but instead it arrived on the 4th, I was delighted hahaha I hope your copy of ACOL will arrive soon 😀 ahh yes Leigh is so nice! So is Schwab, Adam Silvera, Amie Kaufman, Becky Albertalli, and Jeff Zentner. I’ve had my tweets replied/liked by them hahaha ❤

      • I’ve already gotten my copy of ACOL – it came a week after the release date. But I still haven’t picked it up for whatever reason…

I haven’t really looked into any of the other authors as I haven’t read their books yet or talked about their books on Twitter but it’s definitely great knowing that there are authors who interact with their readers online!

          • I DON’T KNOW. I’ve been in the weirdest reading mood since at least the middle of February and it’s starting to really weird me out! LMAO I have seen soo many people finish the book and then going straight back into it again for a reread! Definitely has me curious! I might pick it up tonight and see if I can get myself into a reading mood!

  5. YESSSSS I LOVE THIS LIST!!!
And hey, don’t apologize, things get in the way sometimes!
BUT SERIOUSLY. SO ACCURATE. It’s actually really fabulous for me right now because one of my friends has just gotten into reading again- she was in a year long slump and only read Twilight and Divergent for a while, haha. BUT NOW WE CAN FLAIL TOGETHER. AND WHEN SHE STARTS FLAILING AT ME ABOUT A BOOK I DONT KNOW I HAVE TO GO EITH IT BECAUSE I DO IT ALL THE TIME.

    • YAYYYY I’m so glad you loved and could relate to this post hahaha oooohhh that’s so amazing to have a friend who loves reading just as much as you do! I used to do it with my best friend but our similarities ended when The Mortal Instruments ended, apparently she’s only interested to read popular books that would be made into movies ahahaha

  6. You never had chicken pox? That’s crazy, I feel like it’s a right of passage of childhood. I was lucky enough to have it as a baby so at least I didn’t have to put up with the discomfort. I hope you feel better soon!

These are definitely all the things which make me happy. I love nothing more than being asked for recs (although the pressure!) and it’s even better when you get told they loved the book later. And when you find someone who loves a book you do is awesome so you can just fangirl together. That’s the best, especially when it’s a book a lot of people haven’t read because it’s so hard to find people who like the same books.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Neveeeer! I thought it has passed and I’d never get it but well 🙈 thank you though hehe I know right! Being asked for recs isn’t without its consequences hahaha that too! I think that’s why I love being a black sheep together hahaha because everyone else doesn’t share my opinion 😂😂

  7. Oh no about the chicken pox. I hope you get better soon, Puput! I’ve never had them myself but I can relate to your fear of getting them. I hope I never do.
Anyway! I LOVE THIS POST SO MUCH! I completely agree with all of your points. I love recommending books so when anyone asks me for a rec I have so many books ready to throw their way 😂😂. And having someone to flail with is the best. I was actually talking so much to my family about a book I loved recently because I had no one else to talk to and they got so annoyed with me lol. And my favorites sentence in the world is “let’s go to the bookstore”. Anyone I’m with regrets that though because I never want to leave lol. Also, I can so relate to being on a good reading streak and then having it end. Me in Feb versus me in March so far. Except I think I’m finally back to it because of ADSOM! 😁

    Liked by 1 person

    • I thought I’d never get them either but last week I worked with elementary students and I thiiiink that’s when I got infected 😂😂😂 I know right! I love getting enthusiastic over books I love, though I might get a little too much sometimes hahaha I’m actually done talking to my family about books because they give zero crap about it hahaha same! When I go to the bookstore with people it’s no fun! Either they rush me to pick something or they shadow me wherever I go so I’m always like “go and look at something else, I’ll find you when I’m done” hahaha 😛 and I am so glad you enjoy ADSOM it’s the best thing ever!! Hahaha ❤

      Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, elementary students can carry lots of germs. At my last job we had so many elementary teachers and students for customers so I’m thinking that’s how I always ended up really sick a few times a year. 😂
I know I do but sometimes when a book is that good I can’t help it LOL.
That’s exactly how it is for me too, rushing or shadowing. Even with my mom who loves books, she’ll send my little sisters to find me a million times to tell me to hurry up. 🤦
It really is! I can’t believe I waited so long to read it!

        Liked by 1 person

  8. Ugh, I hope you feel better so soon! I hate being sick (as does everyone) but I especially hate when you’re so feverish that you can’t even read 😦

On the topic of recs, my favorite is when my dad picks up a book I recommended and ends up loving it. It just warms my heart to share books with pretty much anyone.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  9. I love this post, Puput! I hope you feel better though. ❤

Okay, but when someone asks me for a rec I get so excited, people start to think I'm crazy. Then I'll start recommending like 5000 books and I'll tell them that they need to read all of them or else their lives won't be complete. But like, being on a streak of good books is the best thing ever. Of course there's always that one that has to come and mess up everything. I always get way too excited when my mom suggests we go to the bookstore. XD

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you so much Adalyn 😀 hahaha sameeee I get over excited whenever someone ask for recs so I miiiight need to learn to suppress my enthusiasm a little… or not hahaha 😂😂 right?! I hate when my streak has to end because one disappointing book hahaha

  11. I actually get nervous when someone proposes we go to a bookstore because I know I’ll want everything, but also that I don’t have the money to buy anything! It’s a dilemma. 😉

  12. These are all so true! I found out that one of my co-worked (and now good friend) reads remotely similar books to what I read, and I was BEYOND excited. And then she asked me for recommendations and she made my week. So far she hasn’t DISliked anything that I’ve sent her! And now whenever I read a particularly good book, I text her partway through with “OMG you HAVE to read this!” And it’s just so exciting 🙂

I also LOVE it when my husband and I just go hang out in a bookstore for a while to kill time. We avoid them like the plague because we both can’t resist buying things, but when we finally go it’s a thrilling moment 😀

    • OMG that is amazing! I also recently found out that my coworker loves fantasy, though she mostly only reads popular books haha but that’s something because finding a real bookworm in real life is hard hahaha so you’re definitely lucky 😛 awww bookstore date is the best! I used to go there with my ex but he was impatient and passive-aggresively teased me about the amount of money I spent in books… pffft someday I’ll find a guy who loves me and my books just as much 😂😂

  13. THESE THINGS ARE SO SO GOOD! AHHH!! Oh but honestly being on a good-reading streak is just LIFE and I can’t ever flail enough when it happens! That was me at the beginning of this month. I read A Conjuring of Light (!!), The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Hate U Give like all in one week and ALL WERE 5 STARS AND I JUST JFADKSALDJ. 😍 It makes me remember why being a bookworm is the best thing ever.

(Also I hope you feel better soon!! I have never had chicken pox but it seems awful, eeek. *sends get well soup*)

    • The things that make us happy… hahaha RIGHT?! I feel like I’m over the moon whenever that happens hahaha well ACOL was downright amazing and my copy of THUG is on its way so I can’t wait to devour it immediately 😀 thank you Cait! It sucks but the upside is I get to stay home from work and just read books & blog 😛

  14. I want to say sorry you caught chicken pox now but it’s also lucky you did because I know how dangerous it can be as you get older. My niece actually had chicken pox last week so when I saw this I was like aw snap haha!
    Hope your doing better.

This post is literally my life, I adore when people ask me for recommendations. I get so happy and then go overboard and give them a big long list!

  15. YESSS I RELATE TO ALL OF THIS! Whenever my mom tries to convince me to run errands with her, all she has to do is mentioned the bookstore or the library and I AM THERE. Also, book recs?? They are the BEST to give. Whenever someone asks, I’m determined to find the perfect book for them, but also one that I can flail about when they’re done, hahaha! FANTASTIC POST!!

  16. These things definitely all make me one very happy bookworm! 🙂
I’m currently on a good book streak, so I’m crossing my fingers it keeps going! And I absolutely love discovering a new author on my own. The last one I discovered was Juliet Marillier, when I just randomly picked up Daughter of the Forest in a bookshop because I liked the cover. It turned out to be one of the best books I’ve read, and the second in the series was just as amazing! 🙂
I love being asked for recommendations too, but it does also make me slightly nervous in case the don’t end up liking it. I end up on the edge of my seat, waiting for them to tell me when they’ve read it and if they enjoyed it.
    Great post! 🙂

    • Awww that’s amazing! I’m kind of the same, since ACOL all the books I picked up are pretty amazing ahaha ooohhh I hadn’t heard of her but I’m gonna look it up on goodreads haha I know right? Sometimes I don’t even check whether they end up liking it or not hahahaha 😛

  17. Love all of this! I kind of wish I had IRL friends that read, though. But all of you guys are amazing, so I’m good! The last one, though. “Let’s go to the bookstore”. Whenever my husband says that I just give him the biggest smile and think “is your wallet ready?” hahaha Sometimes when I say no he gives me a look like he just saw a ghost or something. It’s pretty funny.

  21. Lovely post! And I’ve never been to your blog yet even 🙂 I’m always surprised at how many of us there actually is, and a little sad that I’ll never be able to read ALL OF THE BLOGS. Do you get that feeling? 🙂

Also, how is your health? I’ve heard chickenpox was tough for adults :0

There’s one more thing that really makes me happy when it comes to bookish things 🙂 so I’ve started blogging quite recently, and most of my IRL friends don’t really know (although let’s face it, you can be a seasoned blogger and half your surroundings might still not really know). So what I love about this is meeting someone, them referencing books on accident, and being able to say “oh yeah, I blog about books now” 😀 do you know what I mean? God, I hope it’s not just me feeling this high 😀

    • Thank you and WELCOME TO MY BLOG! 😀 I feel the same hahaha and I hope you’ll stick around 😀 I recovered surprisingly quickly and I don’t have a lot of marks so yay for that ❤ I actually wrote a post about when real life friends read our blog hahaha my friends know I blog and they acknowledge my expertise (let's face it blogging about book is an expertise hahaha) but we don't really talk much about it hahaha but they do come to me when they need book recommendations so I get what you mean 😛

      • Ooh! Do you have a link for me for that post please? 🙂
I’m glad you made it okay with the chickenpox 🙂 I also have like two marks 😀 welcome to the adult world of the shingles!! I’ve had them once and apparently it’s a return on chickenpox xD it can only happen to people who have already had chickenpox. It happens to the old, the frail and the sniffling. It’s damn nasty. And I did not just tell you all that 😀 and it’s quite rare too.
