Let’s Conquer My TBR : One Book at A Time

SPARKLING LETTERS BOOK BLOG- LET'S CONQUER MY TBR ONE BOOK AT A TIME.jpg

Hello everyone! ♥

Welcome to my pile of shame : my TBR. Even as I was typing the title, I already knew it was futile because which bookworm, in the history of ever, has successfully conquered their TBR? None, I assume. Doesn’t matter how fast we read, we’ll never get ahead of our TBR because our TBR is endless and always expanding 🙈

Today I will present you my physical TBR. This is clearly not counting the unread books on my kindle app. Let’s not go there, shall we? 😂😂 I’m gonna need your help to decide which book I need to read soon so if you see a favorite, tell me! ♣

Lo and behold, I present you my physical TBR. Consists of both local and imported books. (P.S. this post will be filled with pictures just because I can).

Physical TBRs.jpg

Okay so I have 28 books on my physical TBR. Not much, yes? Probably not to you but to me, this is a lot. The thing is, I’m not in the habit of buying books I don’t plan to read because imported books are expensive and not that common. I’d rather spend my money on books I’m sure I will read. And being an international blogger, I don’t get physical ARC, ever. So all these books are books that I bought because I was so excited to read but somehow, for various reasons, still haven’t. Though I won some of them from giveaway.

Now let’s see, the left pile is imported books and the right pile is local books. We could say they’re tied, right? I have as many unread imported books as the local ones 😂 let’s take a closer look of some of them ♦

Books I really want to read

Want to read but havent.jpg

These are the books that I really want to read but for some weird reasons, haven’t. Though in my defense, half of them are new releases, so my reason is as simple as I haven’t had the time to get around it.

  1. We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. This is my latest purchase that I bought early March. I’m gonna get around it very soon.
  2. A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard. You know… this book received so many positive pre-release thoughts that I practically raced to my laptop and ordered it from TBD. It arrived early aaaand I still haven’t read it 😂 I’m putting it off because once I read contemporary I’ll want to go on a contemporary binge and right now I have some fantasy I need to read.
  3. History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera. I was whining so much when my copy was still on its way and everyone else was gushing about it hahaha 🙈 to be fair, I have a couple of valid reasons. 1) You probably remember my friend passing away last month? I just didn’t want to read book about death yet. I love getting emotional, but I don’t want it to get too personal. 2) I promise to buddy read with Fadwa! 😀
  4. The Unbound by VE Schwab. Okay I’m totally stalling with this because The Unbound is the ONLY Schwab’s book I haven’t read (not counting her debut series) and I don’t want to run out of Schwab’s books 😛
  5. Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Shuterland. No reasons, I just haven’t got around it.

Books I want to read but need encouragement

Need encouragement.jpg

Oh these two books…. The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin is probably the oldest book on my shelves. No kidding. I actually really loved the series! It’s intense and intriguing and I remember being super eager to read the final book. In fact, I did start reading one or two years ago but I… forgot everything. I blamed the delayed release, though. I couldn’t remember anything more than the basic plot of the first book 😂 I don’t want to reread the 1st and 2nd books so I’m stuck now hahaha if only anyone want to refresh my memory I will read book 3, I promise.

I started Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova last month but got bored and distracted. The thing is, I actually loved the writing, the premise, and the plot, but I didn’t like Alex that much. And it’s always hard for me to pick up a book after I left it. So, any encouragement for me to finish it?

Books I already lost interest in

Lost interest.jpg

These are the books that I used to be excited for but as time goes (and reviews come) I started to just… lose interest. They’re probably gonna stay unread for a long time… oops.

  1. The Weight of Zero by Karen Fortunati. Contemporary book about mental illness is my jam so I was so excited to read this one (still is, actually). Compared to the other books on my shelves, this one just doesn’t pull me. I sense no urgency and keep putting it off. The good thing is, of all the books on this list it has the highest chance of being read, though not anytime soon 😛
  2. Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider. I swear I had never heard of this book before I won it in a giveaway. I looked it up immediately and was excited but now my excitement has died down, mostly because no one I know talk about this book. I’m a mainstream girl who loves to read what everyone else is reading 😂
  3. A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess. I read the first few chapters and it sounded mediocre. Some people swore this is awesome but some others, the ones whose opinion I trust, said this was indeed mediocre. I’m currently not in the mood to read mediocre fantasy so maybe later.
  4. Rebels of the Sand by Alwyn Hamilton. I was super excited for this book because it was dubbed the best debut of 2016 by most people AND goodreads. But then the reviews started coming in and I heard it’s super problematic and offensive to Islam. I have no time for yet another book that misrepresents my religion so honestly I don’t know what I’m gonna do with this book.

Local books.jpg

No matter how good I am in English, reading books in my native language is always easier. Faster, at least. You would think I’d get through my local TBR faster? Haha, no. It was just as bad if not worse. The thing is, I’m wayyyy more excited for imported books so more often than not local books take the back seat. Plus I only have a few people to gush to when I read local books and it’s not fun.

Local 1.jpg

Here are some of my unread local YA contemporary, all by authors I’ve known AND loved so the chance of me enjoying these books is high. I just haven’t got around them and it makes me sad 😂 relax though I’m not gonna go into details, you all wouldn’t know what I’m talking about if I do hahaha on to the next one.

Local 2.jpg

Alright the first book on the left is debut novel of my favorite Indonesian author, Ika Natassa. I’ve read and loved all her books after this one. I guess… I’m putting it off because I’m afraid it won’t be on the same level? Or simply because I don’t want to run out of her book like I don’t want to run out Schwab’s? Who knows 😛 but I’m sure I’ll get around it at some point because it has 90s vibe so I get to be nostalgic. Just kidding I was a baby in the 90s I probably wouldn’t understand the reference 🙈

The two books on the right are both sequels. I read and enjoyed the first book but still haven’t read the sequels because it’s sad! It was made clear in the first book that the male and female protagonist wouldn’t end up together and this story is just a memory. But after getting to know them in the first book I can’t read the second?? Why would I willingly read books where my ship sinks? This will stay on my TBR until God knows when hahaha

That’s a wrap! My entire physical TBRs along with the reasons why I’m still putting off reading them. What about you? How many books do you have on your physical TBR? Is there any of these books that I should read soon? Let me know, encourage me, and tell me about your own TBR! I’d love to hear your thoughts ♥

  1. HIAYLM is excellent; I hope you enjoy it whenever you get the chance to read it! I hated Retribution and wouldn’t recommend reading it, personally. 😂 Rebel of the Sands wasn’t good anyway, tbh. And I have Labyrinth Lost on my TBR as well!

  2. I really need to do a breakdown like this of my physical TBR because there are definitely some books I own that I’ve lost interest in reading. New goal for the summer! 🙂 Also, I’ve heard amazing things about We Are Okay and I really want to read it soon, too!

  3. A shadow bright and burning is also in my TBR though I don’t own it yet hehe. I read The retribution of Mara Dyer this year and I had to skim read to finish it. I didn’t like it and I had enjoyed the previous two books.

  4. please read we are okay and history is all you left me because i really want to know what you think of it! i was also excited for retribution, but after reading evolution, i became afraid and keep delaying and now… i forget everything 😀 i heard from my friends that in a blue moon is meh? compared to her other books. also, dilan! i really want to read it but i’ve never been much of a teenlit reader since i was a kid 😀

    • I will hahaha I think I’ll read We Are Okay soon and HIAYLM at the end of the month, I’ll let you know what I think 😀 same hahaha I still enjoyed Evolution… I guess? I honestly don’t remember but I didn’t hate it hahaha really?? Well that’s a bummer but alright, I bought this during the hari belanja online so it was only for Rp15000 hahaha Dilan is so hilarious and adorable! It’s something you could finish in one sitting and if you are from/have lived in Bandung, it would feel so nostalgic 😛

  5. Hahaha I have about 150 books on my physical TBR (I started collecting/buying them over 4 years ago) so your TBR doesn’t seem too bad to me! 😂 But even with just 20 or so books TBR’s are virtually unconquerable, they just always seem to grow and grow and grow 😭🙈

      • Haha I know it’s quite a problem 🙈 I think I eventually just got tired of trying to police my book buying and now I have a TBR that’s through the roof 😂 I’ve accepted that I’ll probably never finish it all. Luckily I have maybe 10 books on my e-reader, but not much more so that’s not contributing a ton to my TBR ❤

  6. SO MANY BEAUTIFUL BOOKS. 😍😍 I have to admit History Is All You Left Me is my first pick because it’s beautiful but it’s so so so sad and I think maybe if you’ve just been experiencing grief, it might be too hard to read right now? Just take care of yourself if you do. 💕 And I love Mara but I haven’t finished the last book either haha. Also for Rebel of the Sands, I’m not a Muslim so I can’t talk about the religion rep, but thought it was really funny and sassy and I actually didn’t think there WAS religion in it much?? It is fantasy though, so not historical fiction or anything if that helps. (It probably doesn’t help, gah, I’m useless sorry! 🙈🙊)

    • RIGHT? They are so beautiful!! 😍 I thought so too, I almost picked it up a few weeks ago but decided against it haha I’m reading it at the end of the month though! I really want to read Mara if anyone wants to remind me what happened in the first two books hahaha I don’t know… I heard there was misrepresentation about the Djinn and Djinn is a creature of Islam hehe I miiiiight give it a shot someday, who knows 🙈 thank you for the input Cait! ❤

  7. My physical TBR is so unorganised and out of control that I lost count of how many books is on it a while ago 😅 I’m kind of on a self-imposed buying ban so that I can finally read all of the unread books on my shelves because I have a nasty habit of leaving series unfinished, oops.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hahaha I’m usually the same but yesterday I had this impulse to gather them all 🙈 I have the urge to go on book buying ban because I feel like I’ve bought too many but it never works for me so the only thing I could do to compensate is read all these unread books so I don’t feel guilty buying the new ones hahahah 😛

  8. I have about 60+ books that I physically have on my TBR shelf and plan to knock out 43 of those this year in my 2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge. I’m already 6 books behind….

Anyway, I haven’t read any of the books you listed but they sound amazing! Good luck!

  9. I’m so jealous of your TBR size, haha, it’s smaller than my “high priority TBR” 😂😂 The only ones of these that I’ve read are A Quiet Kind of Thunder and Labyrinth Lost. I defs rec AQKOT for when you want a contemporary, because it’s AMAZING. I feel like LL does get a lot better towards the end! It’s definitely not perfect though and I had a lot of issues with the characters, but I really loved the world and mythology that was used so it’s what helped me get through it.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hahaha good luck with that! 😛 I juuust finished AQKOT a couple hours ago and I liked it! It was amazing and sooo adorable hahaha I’m definitely gonna pick up LL again but maybe later, now I’m kind of in a contemporary binge hahaha thank you Lauren! ❤

  10. Most of the ones on your TBR are still on mine too! I so want to get around to History is all You Left Me and A Quiet Kind of Thunder sometime soon because I’ve heard so many great things. I have read Our Chemical Hearts and I adored that book. It’s kind of a love story that isn’t actually a love story, if that makes sense. It’s been a while since I last read it but I think it’s one you’ll like. As for The Retribution of Mara Dyer, I LOVE that whole series! I wish it hadn’t been so long since I read the books because I would provide you with an overview but it’s been years. All I remember it loving how it ended 😂. Good luck with your TBR, Puput!! 💕

    • I finished AQKOT yesterday and it was amazing! A quick read but so important and adorable hahaha I’m going to buddy read History with Fadwa next Wednesday and you’re more than welcome to join in 😛 ahhh I’m so curious about Our Chemical Hearts, I think I’m gonna pick it up soon 😀 nooooo hahaha everyone seems to have forgotten but the first 2 books were about hahaha thank you so much Melissa! ❤

  11. I feel like I should be telling you not to stress yourself out by your reasonably small TBR because mine will put yours to shame but as you say, your books are imported and can be expensive so I’d guess you’ll want to read. I wish I could help motivate you to pick up a book but I have in fact only read 2 of these books and that was the first of the Mara Dyer series which I know I liked but didn’ continue the rest even though I have the whole series on my Kindle. And then Labyrinth Lost which I ended up DNF-ing halfway through as the MC annoyed me too much. I know a lot of people loved Labyrinth Lost and the fact it was both about brujas and was a good representation of a bisexual character so really that should make you want to try again right?

I hope you do manage to read a few of your TBR and others are better at motivating you to pick up than I am.

    • Well yeah, my books are mostly imported and shipping takes approximately 3 weeks so it feels like a waste of time and money if I don’t read them hahaha don’t worry… my true TBR is so much bigger because I have so many unread books on my kindle hahaha but I can’t see it so it’s not a problem… yet 😭😭😭 oohhh the first of Mara Dyer was really good, but I forgot what the second book was about haha SAME!! I felt like the MC was a bit immature…. but I think I’m gonna give it a second chance. Thank you Becky and good luck with your TBR too! ❤
