SO, SO WORTH THE WAIT!!

In case you didn’t know, Shades of Magic is definitely one of my MOST favorite fantasy so naturally, I was really looking forward to this book. And guysss, the wait was so worth it because THIS IS AMAZING! This book is EVERYTHING I wanted and MORE ♥ This is one of those books that is SO GOOD it’s hard to review….. so bear with me while I try to find words? 😛

Plot wise, there’s no doubt this book was splendid. It picked up right where we left off on A Gathering of Shadows when Lila tried to go after Kell to White London. So yeah, we’re getting action since the first chapter and IT WAS INTENSE. I was already on edge from the start and stayed there until 5 chapters before the end. However, it wasn’t… as brutal as I feared it would be. Don’t get me wrong, it was VERY brutal with blood and deaths everywhere but I was kinda expecting something even more brutal. I’m morbid, I know.

But that really doesn’t change the fact that I was anxious the whole time! I was so, so worried that my babies weren’t gonna make it out alive </3 I seriously considered reading the last page just to see who dies and who survives… but I resisted, because element of surprise is my favorite part from a book. I’m not gonna tell you either, but if you wanna know or think that you can’t handle the anxiety of not knowing, just ask me 🙂

Even in the final book, Schwab still successfully surprised me with her flawless world building. There are a couple of new elements and rules when it comes to magic but everything is consistent and in line. Even the additional element felt as if it was carefully planned (which I’m sure is true) rather than an afterthought like we sometimes find in other series. Unlike the previous two books, the pace was pretty fast.

My favorite part of this book is THE CHARACTERS. I have so much love for the characters even the side ones and their relationships and I don’t even know where to start….

You probably already knew how much I love Kell but BOY DO I LOVE THIS DUDE SO MUCH!! His character is just sooo unique and funny! I love that we got to see even more sides of him! I love that he loooooves skulking and it’s actually funny ok? I can see why Rhy, Alucard, and Lila loves to rile him. Speaking about Lila… we got to see MORE of Kell and Lila! I’m so glad they’ve established their feeling for each other in AGOS so we got to see a lot of Kell and Lila’s moments here! ♥

I’ve always loved Lila but never this much because she’s too… too fearless and reckless to the point where I questioned her sensibility–or lack thereof. But in this book I feel like she grew so much? She started to see things from other people’s perspective without being out of character. I think one of my turning point was when she started to consider Kell’s opinion about Holland and actually warmed up to him.

Holland is another character who successfully grew on me. I always liked Holland’s character (not Holland himself) because it’s so complex, but in this book… we got to see so much more of him, from his childhood to his deepest & darkest secrets. It’s… tragic. He was always misunderstood, but I loved seeing his growing relationship with Kell, Lila, and even Alucard.

Just like Lila, Rhy also grew to be much more sensible in this book. And yayyy we got to see more of Alucard and Rhy! We also got to see more of Alucard’s past and it was amazing. He’s actually a very loving and caring man ♥ but to me, the best thing about him from this book is his relationship with Kell! Their constant bickering gave me life. They’re like cranky old people who don’t want to share Rhy 😂 I think one of the reason why this book didn’t feel as brutal for me was because of this… their bickering was very comical.

Other than the main characters, we also got to know more the side characters like King Maxim, Queen Emira, Tieren, Hastra, and Ojka and I just… I loved them to bits and pieces!

Another amazing thing from this book is that this book evoked so much emotion in me!! I cared so much for the characters so it made me sad to see things (bad things!) happened to them… the whole time I went from excited to scared to happy to sad and devastated. I don’t usually cry over fantasy books but this time I did 😂😂

ALL IN ALL, A Conjuring of Light is a fantastic, splendid closure to the series I loved most. It was brutal, medium-paced, comical, and simply amazing. The characters are beyond amazing, the interaction between them even more so. It will probably wreck your soul but in a good way. I have so much love for this book and I can’t wait to read Schwab’s next masterpiece! ♥

  1. Yes yes yes! ACOL was too perfect. ❤ I liked that the action really picked up in this final book and made for a faster-paced story! And I totally agree– so much of my love for this series stems from my love of this wonderful cast of characters. Great review, lovely!

  2. Your review was PERFECT! I just … I have no words to add. It was go, go, go, but there was so much DEVELOPMENT. Of EVERYONE. Going in, I definitely had some hard and fast favorite characters. But by the end of this book … I LOVE THEM ALL SO MUCH! But I think the biggest change for me was Rhy — I had liked him well enough before, but by the end of ACOL I really was completely attached to him. And his relationship with Kell. And his relationship with Alucard.

I totally know what you mean about expecting this to be more brutal. I mean, it WAS brutal, and there were definitely parts that broke my heart. And I was on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time, but I was kind of relieved when I got the end and people were still, you know, breathing. I was like, OMG, we’re actually going to get RESOLUTION to all of this mess. And it’s miraculous and beautiful and THANK YOU because my heart couldn’t have taken anything else. 😀
