Review : The Sun is Also a Star // Way Too Insta-Lovey for My Taste

Sparkling Letters Book Blog- Review-The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon (3).jpg

RATING : 2-5-stars

Goodreads • Amazon The Book Depository

This is my first Nicola Yoon’s book and I was initially reluctant to read it because of the insta love. But then I read positive, glowing reviews from some bloggers whose opinion I trust and decided to give this book a shot. I was disappointed. My initial thought was true. I’m honestly so sad to be giving this book 2.5 stars because I loved the writing so much! 😦 It hooked me right from the beginning but sadly there’s so many things that didn’t work out for me.

Let me break it down to you.

The first few chapters were incredible. I was immediately won over by the writing. Like I said above, it was super amazing! It was smooth and gorgeous and extremely addictive. I was glued to the book I even finished it in a day. I also love the short chapters and all the unique POV because it was… well, unique, and allowed me to know little things I otherwise wouldn’t. It also strengthened the notion that everything happens for a reason.

The characters were also memorable.

I love the fact that this book explored the story of how it feels to be an immigrant in the United States. The struggle, the hope, and everything. I love seeing the different cultures and values between Daniel’s and Natasha’s parents. I also love how different Daniel and Natasha were. I love both of their stories. Daniel was this Korean boy who loves poetry but was expected to be a doctor and Natasha was a Jamaican undocumented immigrant with loves for science and facts. Daniel is a dreamer but unlike him, Natasha’s a very pragmatic and practical person who doesn’t dream because she thought dreaming was pointless. Until she met Daniel.

HOWEVER, reading about the romance between Daniel and Natasha was… painful. And not in a good way. I have to admit, it was cute and romantic and I even shipped them for a while, but then I remembered that all of it happened in ONE DAY and I became super skeptical. HELLO INSTA LOVE! I believe in insta attraction or even the fact that people could fall in love quickly but you don’t meet a person this morning and feel like you’re meant to be together forever by the end of the afternoon. No matter how much I love romance in book, I just can’t believe it. I would’ve been okay if it happens in, like, a week or so.

I tried to look past it and just enjoyed the story, but it was difficult. They kept saying things like ‘I love you’ and ‘we’re meant to be’ and ‘she’s The One’ and I started to get irritated by every other little things. All the things that happened in this book are based on coincidence. I’m fully aware that coincidences happen, but maybe not this often? It was just weird and frankly… a little annoying 😦 this might be a bit biased as I’m never a fan of poetry but Daniel’s talk about it and all the other philosophical questions also started to drive me mad.

Oh and remember in the first paragraph above I mentioned that I love all the unique POVs? Well… at this point even I started to hate it. Some POVs were just unnecessary and honestly a waste of page and I just wanted to get it over with.

It made me sad because I really wanted to love this book </3

I heard a lot of people said that the ending was amazing. People said that the ending made them give the book an extra star. So at this point, I only kept reading because I was hoping that the ending will make up for all the things I didn’t enjoy. But then I reached the end of the book and I was… unimpressed. I mean, it was a beautiful closure and so bittersweet. More sweet than bitter, but it still didn’t wow me the way I expected it to.

ALL IN ALL, The Sun is Also A Star is an important story about how it feels to be an immigrant in the US, both legal and undocumented. It was written beautifully and it will glue your face to the book. However, I was too bothered by the insta love to actually enjoy the book.

Book Title : The Sun is Also a Star
Author : Nicola Yoon
Publisher : Delacorte Press (2016)

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

  1. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this. I’m not a fan of Insta-love either. But I really do want to read this because I’m Jamaican and getting representation means so much to me.. great review though!

  2. I had completed feeling about this one I wasn’t a big fan of Daniel because him trying to convince Natasha they were meant to be seemed a tad creepy to me. And the poetry annoyed me to however I adored Natasha and the writing is lovely. But the insta love is definitely annoying. and unrealistic.

  3. Oh I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy this book so much – I can understand why the insta-love bothered you, especially if the book is told over the course of such a short time! However, I’m really interested in both of the characters in this story, they seem really well thought-of and diverse, yay! Also, this is a storyline -immigrants in the US- that I’d be interested to read about. Lovely review! 🙂

  4. It’s such a shame how insta-love can overshadow a story that has some important messages. I loved how the author included a diverse cast of characters and touched on some very important topics, but when I heard about the one-day love fest, I was more than a little skeptical about picking this one up. It’s a little disappointing 😦 Wonderful review! 😀 I might pick this one up simply for the immigrant storyline though!

  5. 🙁🙁🙁
Sad faces because this is one of my favorite books. However, I understand how insta love is some people’s red flag. I think it can be done well, I think it was done well in this book, but that’s the great thing about books, we can read the same one and still feel completely differently ❤️

  6. See, I actually hated the ending, it put me off the book a lot. It should have ended sooner in my opinion and I might have been able to get over the insta-love. I was also annoyed with the one day insta-love thing but I could overlook it. I mean, it was cute and I enjoyed the writing style so I forgave it. It’s strange what we are and aren’t willing to put up with in a book, isn’t it?

    • Ahh really? Hahaha I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either 😂 Oh I’m SO annoyed with the insta love even after I tried to look past it. I just couldn’t 😦 but yeahh I love the writing so much haha I know right! Sometimes certain tropes work and sometimes they don’t

  7. I was a bit meh about Everything, Everything for the same reason: the instalove. It’s a shame this book is the same way. 😦 Thanks for sharing though and, as always, fabulous review! ❤

  8. I received a free audiobook download for this one and I’ve been debating on whether or not to listen to it. Insta-love isn’t my thing, so I think I will probably pass. It’s too bad because it sounds like other aspects of the story were great!

  9. I’ve had this one sitting on my shelves for a while but haven’t picked it up because I’m worried about the insta love and now I’m a bit more hesitant. Insta love rarely if ever works for me and I pretty much always have the same reaction you did with this. But I love how it explores immigration and different types of families. I’ll definitely have to read it one day since I already own it but I’ll keep in mind about the insta love a bit more and lower my expectations. Great review as always, Puput!! 😁💕
