Review : The Sun is Also a Star // Way Too Insta-Lovey for My Taste

This is my first Nicola Yoon’s book and I was initially reluctant to read it because of the insta love. But then I read positive, glowing reviews from some bloggers whose opinion I trust and decided to give this book a shot. I was disappointed. My initial thought was true. I’m honestly so sad to be giving this book 2.5 stars because I loved the writing so much! 😦 It hooked me right from the beginning but sadly there’s so many things that didn’t work out for me.

Let me break it down to you.

The first few chapters were incredible. I was immediately won over by the writing. Like I said above, it was super amazing! It was smooth and gorgeous and extremely addictive. I was glued to the book I even finished it in a day. I also love the short chapters and all the unique POV because it was… well, unique, and allowed me to know little things I otherwise wouldn’t. It also strengthened the notion that everything happens for a reason.

The characters were also memorable.

I love the fact that this book explored the story of how it feels to be an immigrant in the United States. The struggle, the hope, and everything. I love seeing the different cultures and values between Daniel’s and Natasha’s parents. I also love how different Daniel and Natasha were. I love both of their stories. Daniel was this Korean boy who loves poetry but was expected to be a doctor and Natasha was a Jamaican undocumented immigrant with loves for science and facts. Daniel is a dreamer but unlike him, Natasha’s a very pragmatic and practical person who doesn’t dream because she thought dreaming was pointless. Until she met Daniel.

HOWEVER, reading about the romance between Daniel and Natasha was… painful. And not in a good way. I have to admit, it was cute and romantic and I even shipped them for a while, but then I remembered that all of it happened in ONE DAY and I became super skeptical. HELLO INSTA LOVE! I believe in insta attraction or even the fact that people could fall in love quickly but you don’t meet a person this morning and feel like you’re meant to be together forever by the end of the afternoon. No matter how much I love romance in book, I just can’t believe it. I would’ve been okay if it happens in, like, a week or so.

I tried to look past it and just enjoyed the story, but it was difficult. They kept saying things like ‘I love you’ and ‘we’re meant to be’ and ‘she’s The One’ and I started to get irritated by every other little things. All the things that happened in this book are based on coincidence. I’m fully aware that coincidences happen, but maybe not this often? It was just weird and frankly… a little annoying 😦 this might be a bit biased as I’m never a fan of poetry but Daniel’s talk about it and all the other philosophical questions also started to drive me mad.

Oh and remember in the first paragraph above I mentioned that I love all the unique POVs? Well… at this point even I started to hate it. Some POVs were just unnecessary and honestly a waste of page and I just wanted to get it over with. 

It made me sad because I really wanted to love this book </3

I heard a lot of people said that the ending was amazing. People said that the ending made them give the book an extra star. So at this point, I only kept reading because I was hoping that the ending will make up for all the things I didn’t enjoy. But then I reached the end of the book and I was… unimpressed. I mean, it was a beautiful closure and so bittersweet. More sweet than bitter, but it still didn’t wow me the way I expected it to.

ALL IN ALL, The Sun is Also A Star is an important story about how it feels to be an immigrant in the US, both legal and undocumented. It was written beautifully and it will glue your face to the book. However, I was too bothered by the insta love to actually enjoy the book.
